Arttu Fiva won a 10-point tiebreaker for the Captains at No. 5 singles, picking up his sixth win of the spring in an 8-1 team loss to the nationally-ranked University of Redlands. Christopher Newport falls to 6-3 on the season while the 19th-ranked Bulldogs improve to 5-3 in the early portion of the schedule.
Fiva captured CNU's lone win after the home team had clinched the match, facing Joey Dulle in the No. 5 position. The Captains' sophomore won the a competitive first set, 7-5, but dropped the second 6-1. In the tiebreak, it was CNU's second-year player that went on to win, 10-7.
Freshman
Max Katcher also won a set for CNU in singles play, dropping Gram Leahy at the No. 6 slot in the second set. Leahy shut out Katcher in the first, but the CNU rookie bounced back for a 6-3 win of his own in the second. Leahy would clinch the match, though, winning 6-4 in the third and deciding set.
In doubles action, each individual match was highly competitive, particularly at the No. 3 position where Katcher and Fiva stretched Dulle and Jake Ly before suffering an 8-6 setback.
The loss is just the third of the season for CNU, and the second to a nationally-ranked program. The Captains are right back in action on Friday, facing another nationally-ranked foe in the 23rd-ranked Whittier Poets. The match is the final bout as part of the spring break road trip to California and will be the second of three straight matches against ranked teams.
