Carolyn Query Collects 100th Career Victory as CNU Women’s Lacrosse Topples Frostburg State, 14-8

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Guided by a four-goal outburst by Erin Callahan and a suffocating defensive effort, Carolyn Query collected her 100th career victory as the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team took down Frostburg State, 14-8, during a Capital Athletic Conference battle on a freezing Saturday afternoon at Captains Turf Field.

Fittingly, Query made history at home as she joined the 100-win club in front of the CNU faithful. During her record-setting career at Christopher Newport, she now has twice as many wins as any other coach in program history. Among her 100 victories, she boasts six conference championships and a first-round triumph in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. While taking the program to new heights, she has won games in nine different states and U.S. territories and boasts wins against 28 different programs during her eight-year tenure in Newport News.

Helping their coach make history, the Captains showed off their tremendous depth as six players scored at least one goal and three contributed hat-tricks. Along with Callahan's five-point performance, Lindsay Weaver and Meaghan Galvin also contributed three goals. Freshman Catie Chess added a pair of tallies as well.

On the defensive side, Hanna Slough was spectacular between the pipes as she made 12 saves, including six off free-position attempts. She also forced a pair of turnovers and collected five ground balls. Tess D'Arcy also clamped down on the FSU attack with four caused turnovers, while Callahan and Mariah Ginebra added two apiece as well.

With the victory, Christopher Newport stands at 5-5 on the season, including 2-1 in the CAC. Frostburg State is now 7-4 with a 1-2 mark in conference action.

Right from the start, the Captains set the tone. Galvin struck for a pair of early goals, including a bruising tally after battling through several Bobcat defenders. Chess also snapped off a dart after burning the defense from the near side of the field before Callahan added her first goal off an eight-meter shot to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.

Although Frostburg State was eventually able to get on the board, the CNU defense regrouped and pieced together a breathtaking run. Ginebra, Kedron Walsh, Kirsten Mendelsohn, and Corbyn Hale all forced turnovers to frustrate the Bobcat attack. Slough also slammed the door on a free-position attempt before the Captains went back to work on the offensive end.

Carly Wilson kicked off the late push by CNU after spinning a defender before driving home her first goal. Less than two minutes later, she settled in behind the cage and sent a perfect feed to Weaver, who burst in and scored to grab a 6-1 advantage with nine minutes remaining in the first half.

Once again, the Bobcats were able to scratch out another goal before the hosts closed out the opening period with back-to-back strikes by Galvin and Weaver. Slough also made a sensational defensive play after a foul got her out-of-position. Finding herself behind the cage, she was able to catch up to the Bobcat attacker as she ran around the near post and made an out-stretched save to close out the first half.

Staring at an 8-2 deficit, Frostburg State made things interesting after halftime as the visitors lit up the scoreboard with back-to-back goals to pull within four.

Once again, Slough came through with another huge defensive stand to stop the resurgence. First, she stoned an eight-meter shot. Moments later, after a CNU turnover, she was able to get back in position and stop a two-on-none situation before clearing the zone.

Sensing a shift in momentum, Query called for a timeout. The stoppage worked perfectly as Kylie Chaplin scored off an eight-meter shot right after the break to grab a 9-4 lead with 19 minutes remaining in regulation. Although FSU responded with another goal to pull back within four, Chess fired a bullet off another free-position attempt to secure a 10-5 lead before Callahan orchestrated an incredible run.

During a five-minute rally, Callahan scored three straight goals to put the game away. First, she capitalized on an assist by Galvin to kick off the run. Two minutes later, she battled through the FSU defense and took a big shot but kept her footing long enough to bury a low dart in the back of the net. Three minutes later, she capped off her day with a tremendous individual effort.

Following a save by Frostburg State, the visitors attempted to clear the zone. Refusing to allow the ball to leave the FSU end, Callahan played tight defense and eventually broke up a pass with a leaping, fully-extended interception. With a pair of defenders trailing her, she spun and drove straight to the cage before snapping off her fourth goal to snare a 13-5 lead.

Later, Weaver put the final punctuation mark on the victory after completing her hat-trick with an eight-meter shot with three minutes remaining. Although FSU was able to toss three goals on the board during the waning moments of regulation, Christopher Newport eased into the 14-8 victory.

Overall, CNU held a 22-16 lead in ground balls. FSU had a 29-23 advantage in shots and secured 14 of the game's 24 draws. However, behind Slough's 12 saves and 17 caused turnovers by the defense, the Captains gave Query her historic victory.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the squad hosts Mary Washington at 4 p.m.
