NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport and DePauw split a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Captains Park. CNU won the opener, 12-4 in five innings, and DePauw came from behind to take the nightcap, 4-3. The Captains are now 11-6, while the Tigers are 8-7.
Christopher Newport scored 12 times and recorded 12 hits in the opening game that ended in the fifth when the Captains opened an eight-run lead, 12-4. CNU posted two big innings, scoring five runs in the second and fifth frames.
Junior
Scoop Simon opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning, her first of three runs batted in in the victory. Junior
Meagan Jones scored four runs and reached base in all four at bats with three hits as well as a hit by pitch. Jones drove in two runs with a fifth inning double, and later in the inning freshman
Brittney Walters ended the game with a run-scoring single.
Junior starter
Hanah Marshall went the distance in the opener, allowing four runs on just four hits. Her record is now 6-2 for the season.
In the second game, the Captains squandered a 3-0 lead as DePauw plated two runs in each of the last two innings to post the 4-3 win.
CNU jumped to a 1-0 lead thanks to a first inning wild pitch that allowed sophomore
Rachael Shiflett to cross the plate. Freshman
Brittney Walters added tp the lead with a two-run home run in the fourth.
The Tigers bounced back by scoring twice in the top of the sixth, and then grabbed their first lead of the day by plating two more in the seventh. DePauw closed out the game by thwarting a CNU rally in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a line-drive double play to end the game.
Sophomore starter
Krista Lewis took the loss to fall to 5-4. Lewis gave up ten hits, with eight coming in the final two innings. From the first through the fourth, Lewis retired ten straight DePauw batters.
CNU now leads the all-time series with DePauw, 3-2. It was the first time the schools played in Newport News after previous meetings on neutral fields and in the NCAA Tournament. DePauw is located in Greencastle, Indiana, and is playing a series of games in the region this week.
The games were the first played at Captains Park this season. Due to poor weather and construction on CNU's facility, several previously-scheduled doubleheaders had to be moved or postponed.
Christopher Newport opens play in the Capital Athletic Conference on Saturday. CNU travels to Buena Vista to take on Southern Virginia. The doubleheader will begin at 2;00 p.m.
