BUENA VISTA, Va.- The Christopher Newport University softball squad successfully opened its Capital Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday. The 24th-ranked Captains swept the Knights of Southern Virginia University by scores of 20-2 and 15-2. Both games were cut to five innings due to the eight-run rule.
CNU posted a total of 35 runs on 22 hits, while Southern Virginia was hampered by 16 errors in the twin bill. The Captains are now 13-6 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Knights fell to 0-9 overall and 0-2 in the CAC.
Christopher Newport blew open each game at Harvey-Dryden Field with a huge inning. The Captains plated 11 runs in the second inning of the opener, and then opened game two with a dozen runs in the opening frame.
Starters
Hanah Marshall and
Krista Lewis benefitted from the high-scoring outburst. Marshall, a junior lefthander, picked up the victory in the opener to improve to 7-2. Lewis, a sophomore righty, earned the win in the nightcap and is now 6-4.
Junior second baseman
Tori Clarke scored six times in the twin bill, posted three hits, and drove in five runs. Freshman shortstop
Brittney Walters recorded three hits in the opener, including two doubles, and knocked in three runs while scoring twice.
Keith Parrs squad will play another conference doubleheader on the road Sunday. CNU heads to Frostburg, MD., to take on the Bobcats of Frostburg State University. The first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Live stats will be available at CNUsports.com/live.
