NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team, ranked 38th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings, will wrap up an eight-match road trip this weekend, with three matches away from home on the docket. First, the Captains will take on 36th-ranked Washington & Lee (8-3) on their home courts at 4:00 pm on Friday, as CNU puts their 7-3 overall mark on the line against the Generals. Then, on Saturday, CNU will play a doubleheader with the opening match being a neutral site battle with Sewanee (7-4) at 10:00 am, followed by the Capital Athletic Conference opener at 2:00 pm at Southern Virginia University (1-4).
CNU returns to the court for the first time in two weeks after a five-match spring break trip to California that saw the Captains return as a nationally-ranked program. CNU captured a 7-2 win over nationally-ranked Whittier College and was rewarded by a spot in the Top 40 for the first time since 2012.
The rookie class has led the way for Christopher Newport in the first ten matches, including an impressive collegiate debut for
David Reed. The Easely, S.C. native has played every match at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles this season, and is tied for second on the team in singles victories. He has six wins, including one over a regionally-ranked opponent, and has played with
Justin Cerny at the top double spot, going 4-5 so far this season.
Sophomore
Arttu Fiva is having a strong start as well, posting a perfect 4-0 mark at No. 4 singles while compiling a team-best seven singles wins so far. In doubles, junior
Chiraag Shetty and sophomore
Steven Boslet have impressed at the No. 2 spot, going 7-2 overall.
