DANVILLE, Va.- The Christopher Newport University softball team finally saw game action on Monday, as the fifth-ranked Captains opened the 2015 season with a 12-8 loss at Averett. CNU had several early-season doubleheaders wiped out by bad weather, and Monday had the second game of the twin bill erased due to darkness with the Captains leading in the fourth inning.
Averett has seen considerable game action already this year, as the Cougars are now 8-0-1 to start the season thanks to the high-scoring victory.
Both teams lit up the scoreboard early by posting three-run first innings. After Averett added five more in the second inning, CNU began its comeback by plating two in the third and then tied the game with three more runs in the fourth frame.
The Cougars grabbed the lead back for good by scoring four more runs in the fifth to provide the 12-8 verdict.
The Captains showed plenty of firepower at the plate, scoring eight times on 11 hits in their season opener. Senior first baseman
Sabrina Hill and freshman shortstop
Brittney Walters both homered, and Walters knocked in five runs in her CNU debut.
CNU sophomore starting pitcher
Krista Lewis did not fare as well. Lewis took the loss, allowing all 12 runs, ten earned, on 12 hits in five innings of work. Lewis also walked six.
Keith Parr's squad is scheduled to travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, on Wednesday for a doubleheader at William Peace University. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
