RALEIGH, N.C.- Christopher Newport University softball posted two wins Wednesday over William Peace, sweeping the Pacers by scores of 5-0 and 8-2 in games played at Meredith College. CNU is now 2-1 for the season after losing its opener on Monday at Averett, 12-8. William Peace is now 1-4-1.
Christopher Newport jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the opener and never looked back, coasting to the 5-0 triumph. The Captains got the scoring started when junior second baseman
Tori Clarke singled in junior outfielder
Meagan Jones. Sophomore outfielder
Rachael Shiflett then scored on a wild pitch, followed by a Pacer fielding error that allowed both senior
Sabrina Hill and Clarke to come home with unearned runs.
The Captains were led in the first game of the non-conference doubleheader by three hits from third baseman
Alexis Pope. The junior singled twice and also doubled in freshman
Sadie Rynestad, who was pinch running, with CNU's final run of the game in the top of the third inning. Sophomore starter
Krista Lewis went the distance in the opener, evening her record at 1-1 with the complete-game shutout. Lewis scattered five hits over seven innings.
In the nightcap, CNU posted 13 hits and again used a four-run inning to put the game away. The Captains built on a 1-0 start by plating four in the fourth en route to the 8-2 victory.
The second game was dominated by Rachaels, as sophomore outfielder
Rachael Shiflett recorded three hits and freshman shortstop
Rachael Payne drove in three runs. Two of Payne's three runs batted in came on her first home run as a Captain in the four-run fourth, and CNU also went deep as juniors
Meagan Jones and
Tori Clarke also registered solo shots, their first home runs of the season. Junior lefthander
Hanah Marshall went the distance in game two to notch her first win of the season. Marshall allowed just two runs on four hits and struck out seven William Peace batters.
Keith Parr's squad is ranked fifth in the nation, and has now scored 21 runs in three games, an average of a run per inning.
CNU's weekend games in Virginia Beach have been postponed. The Captains are presently slated to return to action next Wednesday at home against Lynchburg, but any changes or additions to the schedule will be posted here on CNUsports.com.
