Box Score in HTML FormatBox Score in PDF FormatVIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Playing their second NCAA Division I opponent in as many days, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team earned the doubles point against the Richmond Spiders (2-3), but fell by a final score of 6-1 on Sunday evening.
The Captains (2-1) won the doubles point in thrilling fashion, picking up wins in two of three doubles matches. Facing off against the Spiders, picked fourth in the 12-team Atlantic 10, CNU turned to the same lineup that earned the doubles point against Longwood on Saturday.
At the No. 3 doubles slot, sophomore

Max Katcher got rolling late and dominated the conclusion of their match. The CNU pairing pulled away for a 6-3 win over Caleb Troy and Stathi Kyriakides.
After Richmond countered with a 6-4 win at No. 1, the Captains secured the doubles point with an up-and-down set from junior
Chiraag Shetty and sophomore
Steven Boslet. CNU's No. 2 tandem raced out to a 2-0 lead before trading three-game runs to lead 5-3. Richmond's Jonathan Quenard and Dylan Trent survived a pair of set points to hold for 4-5, and then broke CNU's serve to tie things up at five. CNU earned another break, but trailed 40-love on Shetty's serve to win it. The two rallied to win the next four points, capturing the victory, 7-5.
In singles, Shetty took the first set against Canyon Teague at the No. 3 line, marking the lone set won by a CNU player in the match. He would not be able to hold off Teague, suffering a 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) loss.
David Reed battled at No. 1 singles, forcing a tiebreak in the first set, before falling to senior Ethan Dunbar 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.
The CNU men are now off for nearly two weeks before taking on their first Division III opponent of the season, hosting Franklin & Marshall College at Noon on February 21.
