FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team opens the spring season this weekend, taking on a pair of NCAA Division I opponents on neutral courts. First, CNU travels to Fredericksburg, Va. to take on Longwood University at 1:30 Saturday, followed by a match on Sunday against the Richmond Spiders in Virginia Beach at 6:00 pm.
The Captains open the season with just one upperclassmen on a young, but talented roster. Junior
Chiraag Shetty is the lone veteran, earning All-Conference honors in each of his first two seasons. Sophomore All-Conference selections
Arttu Fiva and
Steven Boslet also return to the fold for head coach
Eric Christiansen, while
Sam Thomson returns to the court after an injury.
A handful of freshmen joint he group this spring and will look to make an immediate impact on the court. Freshman
David Reed was ranked in both singles and doubles in the preseason regional rankings, headlining the quintet of rookie players.
