CNU Basketball Hosts Wesley Saturday at 2:00 & 4:00 pm

Game Notes:  Men's Basketball  ||  Women's Basketball

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With just two home dates on the regular season schedule, the Christopher Newport basketball teams host Wesley College on Saturday in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. First, the women's teams take the court at 2:00 pm, followed immediately by the men's programs tipping off at approximately 4:00 pm.

It will be a special day in the Freeman Center as the CNU Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2015 will be officially inducted during halftime of the men's game. Five former CNU student-athletes will join the Captains' Hall of Fame, including former basketball players Davon Barton and Candace Bryant.

The game will also serve as Senior Night for the CNU Storm Dance Team and the CNU Cheerleaders. The Storm will be recognized at halftime of the women's game, while the cheerleaders are honored prior to the men's tip-off.

In the afternoon's first game, the CNU women are looking to bounce back after a pair of setbacks in league play. The Captains (12-8, 8-5) will face off against Wesley (10-10, 6-7), as both teams battle for positioning in the CAC Tournament. Wesley is currently tied for sixth with York College (Pa.), and one game ahead of St. Mary's College (Md.).

Christopher Newport has not lost back-to-back games in the Freeman Center since the 2011-12 season, and has suffered back-to-back home conference losses just once since the doors opened in 2000-01, dropping three straight to end the 2004-05 season.

This season, the Captains' lone senior, Camry Green, has been posting one of the finest individual seasons in program history, averaging a double-double through the first 20 games of the season. She ranks second in the CAC in rebounding, with 12.1 boards per game, and leads the team with 13.7 points per game. She is just 58 rebounds shy of becoming the fifth player in program history to reach 1,000 for her career, and would become the third player to reach the 1,000 point and 1,000 rebound plateaus.

Wesley College comes into the Saturday afternoon tilt as winners of three of the last four conference games, including a big win on the road against Marymount University. Sophomore Brionna Johnson has been a dominant force all season for the Wolverines, leading the conference in rebounding with a 12.4 average, paired with the second-best scoring mark in the league, with 17.6 points per game.

The Wolverines have just 11 players on the 2014-15 roster, and only seven players are averaging double-figure minutes this season. Alexus Stroud is a dangerous three-point shooter, averaging 12.4 points per game with 2.3 three-pointers made per contest.

On the men's side, the Captains are also looking to bounce back after a loss, suffering a heart-breaking overtime setback at home on Wednesday night versus Salisbury. Saddled with the loss of leading scorer Marcus Carter early in the contest due to an injury, the Captains were unable to extend a late lead and were defeated in overtime by the Sea Gulls. The loss dropped CNU to 14-6 overall, 9-4 in the CAC; Wesley enters Saturday's contest with a 10-10 overall record, 8-5 in the league. This weekend's contest, as will all of the remaining five contests in the regular season, will play a pivotal part in the conference tournament seeding.

CNU has been led by a pair of freshman of late, as guard Aaron McFarland is averaging 10.8 points per game since joining the starting lineup five games ago, and forward Brendon Burrows has seen a spike in minutes due to strong play on both the offensive and defensive end. Burrows is averaging nine points and over five rebounds per game in the last three contests, in which he has played no less than 18 minutes.

Since the last time the two teams played, seeing CNU capture a 75-62 win on the road in early January, the Wolverines have been up-and-down, pulling out a pair of impressive wins over top teams in the league, while also suffering a loss to a sub-.500 team.

Three junior guards lead the Wesley offense, each averaging double figures while averaging nearly four three-pointers made per game. Anthony Bowers leads the attack with 12.1 points per game, while Wayne Lennon and A.J. Tilghman are each pouring in 11.9. The guard-heavy lineup is led in rebounding by Lennon, with 6.8 boards per game.

Live stats and live video will be available for both contests, at CNUsports.com/live.
