ASHLAND, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will face its first road test of the year on Saturday when the Captains head to Randolph-Macon for a noon showdown with the Yellow Jackets at Day Field.
Following a pair of home games to start the year, CNU hits the road with a 1-1 record. Randolph-Macon enters the showdown with a 1-0 mark following a victory at Marymount in the squad's opener on Wednesday.
One of the oldest rivalries in CNU history, the Captains and Yellow Jackets have battled 12 times with each program posting six wins. Christopher Newport has won the previous three meetings, including a 19-9 triumph in Newport News last year.
This season, the Captains evened their record at 1-1 following an impressive 19-2 victory over Bridgewater on Wednesday. During the contest, four players registered hat-tricks, including four-goal efforts by
Meaghan Galvin and
Colleen Bourgal.
Kylie Chaplin also contributed four assists.
So far this season, Chaplin leads CNU and ranks in the top-five in the CAC with seven assists and nine points. In addition to Chaplin, Christopher Newport has received contributions from a host of players on the offensive end. Through two games, nine Captains have already scored at least one goal, including five by Galvin.
On the defensive end,
Hanna Slough boasts a .562 save percentage.
Lindsay Weaver and
Mariah Ginebra have also forced four turnovers apiece. Additionally, Galvin leads CNU with six ground balls, while
Erin Callahan has added seven draw controls.
In its first outing on Wednesday, Randolph-Macon looked strong as the squad led from start to finish against Marymount. Janelle Whitman recorded four goals for R-MC, while Shannon Jamieson added three against the Saints. Allie Walker came through with six saves, and Susie Snee chipped in with six draw controls and a pair of ground balls as well.
Following Saturday's action, Christopher Newport will head to San Juan, Puerto Rico for a pair of games over Spring Break. The Captains will kick off the trip on March 3 against Roanoke before taking on St. John Fisher two days later.
