Four Captains Post Hat-Tricks as CNU Women’s Lacrosse Storms Past Bridgewater, 19-2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Four Captains posted hat-tricks and eight registered at least one point as the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team stormed past Bridgewater, 19-2, during a non-conference showdown on a wintery Wednesday afternoon at Captains Turf Field.

With the threat of a snowstorm on the horizon, CNU made quick work of Bridgewater as the hosts nailed down an eight-goal halftime lead and simply ran away from the Eagles after that point. Meaghan Galvin paced the attack with six points, including four goals. Colleen Bourgal also exploded for four goals, while Erin Callahan and Carly Wilson added three apiece.

Along with the leading scorers, Kylie Chaplin continued to shine as the squad's top facilitator as the junior dished out four assists. Wilson and Galvin also had a pair. On the defensive end, Hanna Slough earned the victory after notching 11 saves for the Captains. Lindsay Weaver also caused three turnovers to help frustrate the Eagle attack.

With the victory, Christopher Newport evens its record at 1-1 on the season. The loss drops Bridgewater to 0-1.

Following an 11-day layoff after their last official game, the Captains looked energized from the start. In the first four minutes, Galvin handed CNU a fast two-goal edge. On her first strike, she took the ball at the top of the arc, blew past a defender, and ripped a rocket across the zone into the back of the net. Three minutes later, she secured a perfect feed from Catie Chess and quickly converted it into her second goal.

With the offense already clicking, the defense looked equally impressive. Katie Gaskin forced a turnover before Jen Doering crashed down on an Eagle and caused another BC miscue with a thundering stick check. Shortly thereafter, Callahan capitalized on the defensive dominance and tacked on her first goal off a free-position attempt.

Following a Bridgewater timeout, the CNU defense remained vigilant. Callahan and Kirsten Mendelsohn each forced turnovers, while Slough made a pair of stops during a relentless run by the Eagles. Fortunately, after withstanding the onslaught, the Captains took over on the offensive end once again.

Galvin completed her first hat-trick of the season in the 12th minute of action off a free-position shot. Later, the hosts used tremendous ball movement to extend the lead even further. Wilson hit Chess in stride for the squad's fifth goal before Bourgal and Chaplin also converted strikes following clean runs through the BC zone.

After Callahan secured an 8-0 lead following her second free-position goal of the game with 12 minutes remaining in the half, the Eagles answered with their first score. Unfazed, Bourgal immediately responded after securing a feed from Galvin before dodging a defender with a quick cut on the way to her second goal of the game.

Leading 9-1 with 10 minutes left in the half, Christopher Newport settled in on the defensive end and blanketed the Eagle attack. Slough led the way as the junior made five saves and also intercepted a pair of passes with gorgeous stick work in the crease. Caitlin Osbourne also ended a Bridgewater run after forcing a miscue to seal the eight-goal lead entering halftime.

Following the break, Christopher Newport wasted little time securing a running clock in the second half. Galvin came through with her fourth goal before Wilson wrapped around the goal and blistered the back of the net with a dart to snatch a 10-goal lead just three minutes into the second stanza.

Continuing a strong run by the freshmen, Doering came through with her first collegiate goal before Bourgal chimed in with a man-up strike off a feed from Galvin. Although the Eagles were able to answer with an extra-man goal of their own, the visitors could never find their rhythm.

Boasting a 13-2 lead midway through the second half, the Captains eased into the victory. Callahan opened up the final push by flashing exceptional stick skills. The sophomore standout grabbed a pass while sprinting towards the cage. Although the ball popped out momentarily, she snatched it out of the air and spun a bullet through the defense for her third goal.

With more than enough cushion, Christopher Newport put the game away in style. Wilson and Weaver each struck twice during the final nine minutes of action, while Bourgal came through with her fourth goal of the game to lock up the 19-2 triumph.

In addition to her offensive exploits, Callahan also collected a game-high six draw controls and forced two turnovers. Osbourne caused a pair of miscues as well, while Chaplin scooped up a team-high four ground balls.

Overall, CNU held a 42-33 edge in shots and a 27-19 lead in ground balls. The hosts also controlled 14 of the game's 25 draws. Slough and Bridgewater's Rachel Gruber both contributed 11 saves.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday for a noon battle at Randoph-Macon.
