NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will wrap up its early-season homestand on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. when CNU hosts Bridgewater in a non-conference showdown at Captains Turf Field.
The contest is the first for CNU since a 12-7 setback to No. 12 Washington & Lee in the squad's season-opener on February 14. Wednesday's game is the first of the year for Bridgewater.
For those fans unable to make it out to the game, live stats and a video stream will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
Christopher Newport enters the game following a tough battle in the opener two weeks ago. Against the Generals,
Kylie Chaplin contributed four points, including three assists, while
Lindsay Weaver and
Kedron Walsh both notched a pair of goals. On the defensive end,
Hanna Slough collected seven saves and
Mariah Ginebra forced a career-high four turnovers.
Putting their youth on full display, the Captains received several strong efforts from their freshmen during the opener. In addition to Walsh's two goals,
Carly Wilson also found the back of the net in her collegiate debut.
Catie Chess earned a start as well and tied for the team-lead with a pair of draw controls.
Bridgewater enters the season with a veteran-laden squad that includes only six freshmen. The Eagles welcome back four All-Conference performers from 2014, including senior defender Caroline Augsburger. The two-time All-ODAC selection led BC with 40 ground balls and 35 caused turnovers last year.
Along with Augsburger, Bridgewater returns sophomore goalie Rachel Gruber, who maintained a 10.67 goals-against-average in 2014. On the offensive end, the Eagles are led by Jesse Colligan and Caroline Fletcher, who each had at least 30 goals and 10 assists last season.
Wednesday's meeting will be the third match-up between the Captains and Eagles. Christopher Newport currently holds a 2-0 lead in the all-time series, including a 12-6 victory at Bridgewater last year.
Following Wednesday's tilt, CNU will hit the road for the next three games. The Captains will head to Randolph-Macon on February 28 before trekking to San Juan, Puerto Rico for a showdown with Roanoke on March 3 and St. John Fisher on March 5.
