NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- CNU men's tennis rounded out a perfect 3-0 weekend with a 6-3 victory over Methodist University on Sunday, as the Captains have started the spring season with a 4-1 overall mark. The Captains, taking on their former conference foes from the USA South Athletic Conference, won their tenth straight match over the Monarchs, powered by a doubles sweep to start the days action.

Leading the way in the top doubles matchup was the regionally-ranked rookie tandem of David Reed and Justin Cerny, who each picked up singles wins in the No. 1 and 3 slots as well. The top CNU pairing cruised to an 8-2 win over R.J. Clement and Taylor Buchholz, and were followed quickly by an 8-5 win at the No. 2 matchup. Steven Boslet and Chiraag Shetty earned that win, dropping John Dangerfield and Dillon Sullvan.

Rounding out the doubles sweep was Max Katcher and Arttu Fiva at No. 3, breaking the Monarchs to take a 5-4 lead and then completed a 5-0 run to finish out the set with an 8-4 win.

In singles play, CNU split with the Monarchs, capturing wins at 1, 3 and 4. Reed surrendered just one game to Clement in No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1 in what would prove to be the match-clinching victory. Cerny got the Captains up 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3, dropping Dangerfield, and Fiva finished out the CNU wins when he delivered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Dillon Sullivan at No. 4.

CNU is now set to endeavor to the West Coast for five matches as the Captains are away from home for the next six. The Captains will face three nationally-ranked teams in the Spring Break trip to California, which begins on March 1.
