CNU Basketball Closes Regular Season at Penn State Harrisburg Saturday

Game Notes:  CNU Men's Basketball  ||  CNU Women's Basketball

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -- With a first-round home game already locked up in next week's Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, the Christopher Newport University basketball teams will close out the regular season on Saturday, February 21 at Penn State Harrisburg. Tip for the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 pm in the women's game, followed at approximately 3:00 pm for the men. The Captains can finish as high as third, but no lower than fourth in the CAC standings on both the men's and women's side, assuring an opening round doubleheader at the Freeman Center on Tuesday, February 24.

Before the postseason can begin, though, the Captains will wrap up the 25-game regular season with one more game on the road. First, the CNU women (16-8, 12-5) will look to continue their season-ending roll that has included four straight wins, taking on a Penn State Harrisburg team that is just 4-20 overall, 3-14 in league action. The Lions have suffered ten straight losses dating back to January 17. On the men's side, CNU (17-7, 12-5) is looking to bounce back after a loss and needs a win over the Lions (3-21, 3-14) to possibly break a tie for third in the conference standings.

Neither the men or women will decide the conference tournament seeding on their own, as both are currently tied for third in the league standings with Marymount University. The Saints travel to Frostburg State for their finale, also tipping off at 1:00 pm on Saturday.

With the postseason on the horizon, the CNU women are playing well headed into the conference tournament, with four straight wins. Freshman Sam Porter has been a catalyst over the last five games, since joining the starting lineup on February 7 against Wesley. She is averaging a team-best 12.2 points over the last five games, while also hauling in 7.8 rebounds and four steals per game since taking over her new role.

Senior Camry Green has been the team leader all season long, and is approaching a significant milestone with at least two games left in her career. With 990 career rebounds, Green is just ten boards shy of becoming the third 1,000-point and 1,000-rebound player in program history. Adding to her legacy, Green has missed about a dozen games in her career due to injury, yet still ranks fifth on the all-time rebounding chart and 15th in total points.

The Lions are led by junior Kiara Carter, with nine double-doubles this season, and one of the top rebounders in the league. Carter is averaging just under 11 rebounds per contest, while Kaitlyn Carmo takes the lead as the top scorer for Harrisburg, averaging 11.9 points per game.

On the men's side, senior Mike Cherry has been stellar in his last two contests, scoring 45 points as his career rounds into form. He and the rest of the Captains will be looking to bounce back after a road loss at St. Mary's College (Md.) on Wednesday. The CNU senior now leads the team in scoring, with 12.5 points per game, and is hitting at a 38% clip from long range to lead the Captains' three-point heavy offense.

Rookie Aaron McFarland has also been playing well down the stretch after picking up a spot in the starting lineup in the second half. He is one of four players averaging over nine points per game for head coach John Krikorian this season, as Tim Daly (12.5 ppg) and Marcus Carter (12.3 ppg) are the others.

The Penn State Harrisburg men's team has struggled all season long, but has also delivered some big wins, including one against second-place Salisbury University. The Lions are led by a pair of junior big men, as Anthony Morgan and Arick Sodini are the team leaders in scoring and rebounding.
