CNU Women's BasketballNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- As the coaching adage goes, the biggest game on the schedule is the next one, and the next for Christopher Newport is massive in both show and stage. On Valentine's Day, the Captains will host Marymount University in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader with heavy playoff implications in both the women's and men's matchup, set to tip off at 2:00 and 4:00 pm, respectively.
The game will serve as the final home regular season game in the careers of two Christopher Newport seniors, as Camry Green (Richmond, Va.) and
Mike Cherry (Bertie, N.C.) will each be honored in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the opening tip. Both players are 1,000-point scorers for the Captains and are nearing the conclusion of stellar careers at Christopher Newport -- Green as a dominant force of a front-court player and Cherry as one of the finest three-point shooters in school history.
It is also the annual PINK OUT game for breast cancer awareness as part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association charity, Play 4Kay, honoring the late N.C. State head coach Kay Yow. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to join the players and coaches, nationwide, in the fight against breast cancer.
Live stats and live video will be available of both pivotal games, with links found at CNUsports.com/live.
On the court, the first of two massive games in the Freeman Center on Saturday will feature the CNU women taking on the Marymount women. The Captains (14-8, 10-5) are currently in fourth place, one game behind the Saints (15-7, 11-4). With three games left on the schedule, a win for either team helps solidify positioning in the CAC Tournament race. Not only would a win for the Captains move them into a tie for third place, but it would clinch a first-round home game in the postseason.
Following her Senior Day festivities, Green will look to continue leading the Captains on the court as she has all season. The 6-2 forward is the first player to average a double-double this late in the season since Colandra Rollins' completed the task in the 2007-08 season, and continues her attempt to become the third 1,000 point-1,000 rebound player in program history. She now ranked 15th all-time in scoring, with 1,142 career points, and fifth in rebounding, just 32 rebounds shy of 1,000 for her career.
Rookie Sam Porter has stepped up since joining the starting lineup in the last two games, averaging 11 points, seven rebounds and 5.5 steals per game. She remains the second leading scorer and rebounder this year, averaging 9.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game this season.
In the regular season matchup at Marymount, the Saints held off a second-half surge and captured a 58-44 win over CNU on January 17. CNU shot just 34.9% from the field and no Captains finished in double figures in the contest. Conversely, the shallow bench of Marymount did not bother the Saints, as Kiki Laux finished with 17 points and Kievanna Lacey added 13 in the win.
This season, the Saints have been very strong defensively, allowing opponents to score just 52.6 points per game this season. Despite playing just eight players this season, head coach Ashlee Courter-Rogers has her veteran squad in good position heading into the postseason. Lacey, a junior, is averaging a team-high 14.7 points per game while her classmate, Miranda Krott, is averaging 9.5 points and a team-high 9.0 rebounds per game.
Following the key women's matchup, another crucial head-to-head battle will be played between the CNU men and Marymount men. The Captains (16-6, 11-4) will look to take down the second-place Saints (18-4, 12-3), in an attempt to move back into a tie for second place in the league standings. A win would keep the door open for the Captains to earn a first-round bye in the CAC Tournament, with just two games left on the schedule. A win for Marymount would clinch one of the top two spots.
Sophomore
Tim Daly and rookie
Marcus Carter, the Captains' two leading scorers and rebounders, were back in the lineup on Wednesday as CNU defeated Mary Washington on the road, and will look to return to form after injuries sidelined the pair for a couple of games. Carter is pouring in 13 points and grabbing 5.8 rebounds per game, while Daly has added 12.7 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game.
In their absense, rookie
Aaron McFarland and sophomore point guard
Kevin Regimbal have stepped up in a big way, helping propel the Captains to a pair of wins. McFarland is now averaging 9.0 points per game and is up to 12.7 points per game in his seven starts. Regimbal has provided an offensive spark, averaging nearly two assists per game to go with 5.2 points per contest.
On the other side of the court, Marymount is going to have to overcome the late-season loss of leading scorer Jesse Konadu, who has missed the last four games after averaging 13.1 points per game this year. The Saints will lean on powerful big man J.C. Hoellich, averaging 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. The senior forward leads the league in blocked shots and total rebounds.
In the first matchup this season, the Captains led by as many as 12, but a methodical second-half comeback saw the Saints capture a dramatic win, 62-60. Hoellich hit back-to-back layups in the final three minutes to lead Marymount to the win.
Following the Captains' final home game, the two teams will travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday, February 18, and wrap up the regular season at Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, February 21. The CAC Tournament seeding and schedule will be announced via a press release from the conference office following the final doubleheader.
