CNU Football Holds Off William Paterson, 42-30, on Senior Day for Second Straight Win

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport jumped to an early lead Saturday, and never trailed as the Captains posted a 42-30 victory over William Paterson. The triumph at POMOCO Stadium was the second straight for CNU, and came on Senior Day in New Jersey Athletic Conference play. The Captains are now 3-6 overall and improved to 3-5 in their first season in the NJAC.

Senior quarterback Tyler Quigley led the charge, throwing for two touchdowns and running for a one-yard score during a rainy first quarter. Quigley became just the second CNU quarterback in history to throw for more than 300 yards in back-to-back games. The Burke, Va., native completed 20 of 29 attempts for 314 yards just a week after going 19 for 23 for 306 yards as CNU surprised 18th-ranked Salisbury, 51-39. Phillip Jones of the Captains accomplished the feat back in 2005.

"This is a credit to every senior on this team," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said. "They kept this team together through a long losing streak, kept the right attitude and now we're seeing some positive results. I'm really proud of this group, they're good young men and haven't stopped working."

Quigley connected with sophomore wide receiver Kyree Burton for a seven-yard TD pass in the final minute of the first half, and then hit junior tight end Josh Patterson on an 11-yard scoring strike early in the third quarter.

Quigley again shared time at quarterback with fellow senior Arsaiah Robinson, who also had a terrific day. Robinson, from Richmond, Va., ran for two touchdowns (from five and four yards out) and also threw a 23-yard scoring pass to junior Taylor Loudan.

Yet another senior, cornerback Cameron Barlow, intercepted two passes and became the all-time CNU leader in picks. Barlow, also from Richmond, now has 11 career interceptions. Another senior defensive player, linebacker Mic Edwards, led the Captains for the day with eight tackles and a sack.

CNU held a 21-7 lead at halftime, and remained on top through three quarters, 35-21. The Pioneers, now 2-7 overall and 1-7 in the NJAC, would not go quietly and scored the final nine points of the game after the Captains had opened their biggest lead of the day at 42-21.

Junior wide receiver Taylor Loudan made several sparkling receptions for CNU, and finished the day with 12 catches for 179 yards and a score. Loudan, from Stephens City, Va., has caught 25 passes for 409 yards and two touchdowns in the last two games for the Captains. CNU's top receiver has now posted 60 catches for 999 yards and five touchdowns this season in nine games.

A crowd of 2,874 watched the final home game of the season for the Captains on a wet and warm Senior Day as 21 senior members of the football program were recognized prior to kickoff. It was the first meeting ever of the two schools on the gridiron.

CNU will conclude the 2015 season next week when the Captains travel to play winless Southern Virginia. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. next Saturday, November 14th, in Buena Vista, Va.
