BUENA VISTA, Va.- The Christopher Newport University football squad concluded the 2015 season with a 51-7 victory Saturday at Southern Virginia University. The win was the third straight for the Captains, who finished the year with a 4-6 overall record and a 4-5 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
"We wanted to finish strong, and we were able to do that," Head Coach
Matt Kelchner siad. "Overall, I was very happy with what we did, other than some late penalties, and I give a lot of credit to our coaches and student-athletes for their hard work."
The Captains scored seven touchdowns, six on offense and one on an interception return, and also recorded a safety. SVU did not get onto the scoreboard until the final minute of the fourth quarter. The Knights finished the year with an 0-10 overall record and an 0-9 mark in conference play.
CNU jumped to an early lead and led at the half, 23-0. Four second half touchdowns gave the Captains a 51-0 edge before the Knights concluded the scoring. The matinee at the Fields of Southern Virginia was the first meeting ever of the schools, and was palyed in front of 840 fans.
Senior quarterbacks
Tyler Quigley and
Arsaiah Robinson each concluded their careers with big days. Quigley ran for a one-yard score to begin the day and also threw a TD pass, and finished the day with 289 yards passing. Robinson scampered for a score and also threw two scoring passes.
Junior wide receiver
Taylor Loudan caught seven passes for 154 yards and two scores. He finished the year with 1,153 yards receiving, only the fourth CNU receiver in history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in a season.
Junior running back
Daquan Davis posted a two-yard touchdown run and finished the day with 84 yards on the ground.
Senior wide receiver
Joe Jardine caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Robinson, and freshman defensive back
Rhett Morris returned an interception 70 yards for a second-half score for the Captains.
The stellar defensive effort saw the Captains allow just 198 total yards. Sophomore linebacker
Brennan Gary posted seven tackles to lead the squad.
"We brought 70 players and all 70 played in the game," Kelchner continued. "We're obviously not happy with the outcome of the season, but it's good to finish the way we did. It shows a lot about our character and work ethic. This team never stopped working."
The three-game winning streak concluded the 15th year of CNU football. The Captains are now 102-57 all-time.
