ASHLAND, VA. - Christopher Newport took to the road for the first time this season and used a strong scoring effort off the bench to spark a 74-65 win over Randolph-Macon College. The victory at Crenshaw Gymnasium improved the Captains to 3-0 on the season and sends them into Capital Athletic Conference play without a loss. CNU hosts Frostburg State on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
"I don't think we played our best, but we were still able to do enough good things to win the game," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "Randolph-Macon scored on us more than our first two opponents. Tonight it was about our offense taking over and leading us."
Christopher Newport and Randolph-Macon were tied at 27-27 with just over five minutes to play in the opening half Tuesday night before the Captains went on a 15-4 run to lead at the intermission, 42-31. A balanced scoring effort in the first half was paced by
Marcus Carter's 12 points and
Aaron McFarland's ten off the bench as the Captains saw seven players score in the first 20 minutes. Senior
Hunter Wetherell concluded the half with a driving layup to put the Captains ahead by 11.
Randolph-Macon used impressive second-half performances by Michael Taylor (17 points) and Lamont Moore (12 points) to close the gap to as little as seven at 50-43 six minutes into the half, but the Yellow Jackets could not get any closer. The Captains made 12 of 15 foul shots in the second stanza to help close out the victory.
Sophomores
Marcus Carter and
Aaron McFarland each finished with 19 points to lead CNU, while junior
Tim Daly came off the bench to score a dozen. Senior
Hunter Wetherell finished with eight points.
"We stress the final four minutes of each half and tonight the end of the first half really determined the direction of the outcome," Krikorian continued. "We did a good job building the lead and then hanging onto it through the second half."
R-MC was led by Lamont Moore's 21 and Michael Taylor's 19 points. The Yellow Jackets are now 1-3 on the season.
The victory was the fourth in a row for CNU over Randolph-Macon, and all three CNU victories this season have come over opponents from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Captains opened the season with home triumphs over Lynchburg and Washington & Lee.
Although CNU still has four non-conference games remaining on the schedule, the Captains and Frostburg State will open CAC play Sunday at the Freeman Center in a 3:00 p.m. tipoff.
