NEWPORT NEWS, Va.-
For the second straight game, Christopher Newport's defense propelled the squad to victory Tuesday night. The Captains pulled away from Washington & Lee at the Freeman Center, and improved to 2-0 with a 70-52 triumph.

CNU opened the season on Sunday by allowing just 56 points to Lynchburg in a 72-56 triumph.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Captains led by just two at halftime, 36-34. CNU then blew open the game with a 21-9 second-half run to cruise to the 18-point win.

"I thought overall we again played well and we defended very well," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "Playing here at the Freeman Center really gets us fired up, and I think the crowd and the atmosphere in the second half really got us going."

Sophomore Marcus Carter led the way with 20 points, and also contributed five rebounds, three steals, three assists, and a blocked shot. Juniors Justin Hampton and Kevin Regimbal added nine points each.

The Captains dominated the boards in the second half and finished the game with a 39-27 edge in rebounds. CNU out-scored W&L in the paint, 42-28.

"They're big and physical and we knew coming in it would be a challenge for us inside," Krikorian continued. "A lot of guys stepped up and other than some turnovers in the second half, we really played at a high level."

Junior big man Tim Daly posted eight points, six rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots in 20 minutes of playing time. Senior Hunter Wetherell also put up solid numbers inside, scoring six points to go with six boards and two assists in 21 minutes of action.

Washington & Lee, now 1-1, got 12 points and four rebounds from big man Clayton Murtha, but only one point came in the second half. Nicholas George also tallied 12 points for the Generals, but was held to two points in the second stanza by the Captains.

The Captains shot 49 percent from the field, making 28 of 57 shots including six three-point field goals.

CNU's victory gives the Captains a 3-2 edge in the all-time series with W&L.

Christopher Newport now has a week off before travelling to Randolph-Macon next Tuesday night to take on the Yellow Jackets.
