NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport opened the 2015-16 season Sunday, and the Captains registered a 72-56 victory over Lynchburg at the Freeman Center. CNU jumped to a fast start, led by 14 at the half, and never trailed in the non-conference matchup. The Captains led by as many as 21 in the second half, and held the high-scoring Hornets to just 29 percent shooting for the day.
"Overall, it was a very good start," Head Coach
John Krikorian said after beginning his sixth season on the CNU bench. "We didn't shoot all that well, but there were plenty of good signs. Our defense was terrific, and we got production from a lot of people."
Christopher Newport was led by 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists from junior
Tim Daly. Sophomore
Aaron McFarland added 12 points, and junior
Kevin Regimbal scored ten. Sophomore
Marcus Carter posted nine points and nine rebounds in just 24 minutes playing time due to foul trouble in the second half. Junior point guard
Rayshard Brown dished out five assists, and scored seven points to go with seven rebounds. Senior
Hunter Wetherell also contributed eight points and six rebounds.
Lynchburg is now 1-1 after opening the season Friday night with a 91-80 win over Johns Hopkins. CNU's stingy defense held LC to 17 of 59 shooting, including just four for 20 from three-point range. The Captains also out-rebounded the Hornets, 45-40. Big man Alex Graves led Lynchburg with 16 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double.Â
The Hornets made just five of 25 attempts in the opening half as the Captains built a 35-21 halftime advantage. LC missed its first 13 three-point shots as Christopher Newport built its lead.
CNU opened the 49th season of men's basketball in front of 794 fans at the Freeman Center. The Captains are now 38-11 all-time in season-opening games.
The Captains, picked as the pre-season favorite in the Capital Athletic Conference, avenged a 90-66 defeat last season at Lynchburg. The Hornets now lead the all-time series, 12-8.
Sunday was a good day for Capital Athletic Conference squads, as the CAC won three head-to-head meetings with teams from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Wesley knocked off second-ranked Virginia Wesleyan and Mary Washington downed Randolph-Macon.
Christopher Newport hosts another Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent on Tuesday night. Washington & Lee will travel to play the Captains at the Freeman Center in a 7:30 p.m. start.Â
