NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Conference action rolls on as the Christopher Newport women's soccer team hosts York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday evening, taking on the Spartans at 5:00 pm. The Captains (7-3-1, 2-1-0) will look to add to their modest winning streak while York (3-7-0, 1-2-0) hopes to end a three-game skid. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
The game will be just the fourth matchup all-time between the two teams, as CNU holds a 2-0-1 advantage in the series. Last season, the Captains defeated the Spartans on the road, 1-0, as a pair of defenders combined for the game's lone tally.
Sam Rabinek set up
Kira Warner for the game-winning goal in the 24th minute of action and
Haley Casanova made four saves to secure the shutout victory.
This season, the Captains are ranked 10th in the Atlantic South regional rankings released by the NSCAA, and are riding a two-game win streak, both in conference. CNU captured a 3-2 win at Mary Washington and a dominating 7-0 win at Southern Virginia over the last two games, led by three goals and an assist by leading scorer
Victoria Perry.
Perry, the reigning CAC Player of the Year, is among the league leaders in scoring, with 20 points. She has scored nine times and has chipped in a pair of assists to lead a CNU offense that is scoring over two goals per game. Last time out, sophomore
Alexis Haycraft had a big game, scoring a pair of goals, as did junior
Allie McWilliams, with a goal and three assists.
Defensively, CNU has leaned on a pair of stellar goalkeepers, riding the hot hand of sophomore
Carly Maglio of late. Both Maglio and junior
Haley Casanova feature a goals-against average of right around one, and a save percentage of over 75%. The defense in front of CNU's netminders has been very strong, allowing just 11 goals in as many games. Rabinek and Warner have been joined by
Carly Melkus and
Danielle Pratt to fortify the back line.
Coming into Saturday's contest, the Spartans will be looking to kick a three-game losing streak that included a pair of one-goal conference matchups. York fell to Frostburg State, 1-0, before dropping a 2-1 contest at Mary Washington on Wednesday. The Spartans have struggled offensively, featuring just five players with goals scored through the first 10 games of the season. Leading the way has been reserve Corie Elliott, scoring three goals off the bench for a team-high six points.
In goal, Kate Lutte has three shutouts and a 1.36 goals-against average as the Spartans defense has done its best to keep their opponents off the board. York has only allowed 17 goals for a 1.74 GAA as a team.
The Captains will head back on the road for a pair following Saturday's game, traveling to St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday, October 14, and then to Wesley on Saturday, October 17.
