Box Score in HTML FormatBUENA VISTA, Va. -- On the first sunny day in Virginia for over a week, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team made the nice day even nicer as they cruised to a 7-0 win at Southern Virginia University (3-8-0, 0-2-0). Junior
Allie McWilliams scored the game-winning goal and added three assists to lead the way as CNU improved to 7-3-1 overall with a 2-1-0 mark in league play.
The Captains led 2-0 at the half and tacked on five second half scores in an impressive offensive showing. After halftime, the Captains took nine shots, putting an astounding eight of those attempts on-goal.
McWilliams got the ball rolling in the first half after the offense was held off the scoreboard for the first 29 minutes of action. Her first career goal would also hold up as her first career game-winning strike. After a pass from senior
Lindsay Mondloch found her junior teammate behind the defense, McWilliams took advantage of the one-on-one opportunity with the keeper and scored in the 30th minute.
As the first half wound down, sophomore
Alexis Haycraft would put the Captains up by two with just 23 seconds remaining. She showed off her strong leg, blasting a shot from 25 yards out on the right side after a pass from CNU's leading scorer,
Victoria Perry. As the teams broke for halftime, the Captains held a dominant 14-1 advantage in total shots, including a 6-0 edge in shots on target.
When the teams returned to the pitch in the second half, Perry and McWilliams put the game out of reach early. Back-to-back goals in the 53rd and 54th minutes put the Captains up 4-0 and opened the floodgates against the Knights, who could no longer resist the potent Captains offense. McWilliams found Perry for both goals, as the junior forward factored into three straight goals, all from the right side.
In the 60th minute of action, senior
Megan Weast connected on an unassisted score from just inside the box, beating the keeper for her first career goal. Then, just five minutes later, McWilliams wrapped up her tremendous day with her third helper of the game. This time, she set up Haycraft for a shot over Savannah Uri's head in goal for the Knights, putting the Captains up, 6-0. Finally, Christopher Newport wrapped up the scoring in the 85th minute when senior
Shaydah Naraghi connected with sophomore
Alex Miller for the score.
Overall, CNU held a 23-4 advantage in total shots while putting 14 of their attempts on-frame. Perry led the way with eight shots, four on-target with two goals and an assist. Haycraft scored two goals on three shots while Miller and Weast each took a pair of shots. McWilliams' performance came with four shots, two on-goal.
Uri played the full 90 minutes in goal for Southern Virginia, allowing seven goals with seven saves. Offensively, four different players registered shots in the game, but the CNU defense did not allow the Knights to challenge CNU goalkeepers
Carly Maglio and
Haley Casanova, as neither was forced to make a stop.
The Captains return to action this Saturday, October 10 as they host York (Pa.) in CAC action. Kick off at Captains Field is scheduled for 5:00 pm as CNU will take on the Spartans (3-6-0, 1-1-0) in their fourth straight conference game. Live stats and video will be available at CNUsports.com/live.
