Box Score in HTML FormatNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport juniors
Victoria Perry and
Allie McWilliams stayed hot Saturday evening, helping lead the women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at home over York College of Pennsylvania (3-8-0, 1-3-0). Perry and McWilliams have combined for five goals and six assists in the last two games, as CNU improved to 8-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the CAC.
The Captains scored both goals in the first ten minutes of action on Saturday, including a quick strike in the 5th minute of action from McWilliams. After scoring the game-winning goal against Southern Virginia on Tuesday, the junior stepped up in her first career start at forward by notching the first goal against the Spartans.
The play was set up by Perry, persisting through a failed clear by the defense. She raced toward the goal line and cut back, crossing a pass over the Spartans goalkeeper Kate Lutte. McWilliams was the first to the ball, walking it in for the score for her second goal of the season.
Just under six minutes later, the roles would reverse. This time, McWilliams rolled a pass back to
Danielle Pratt, who lifted a perfect long ball over the Spartans defense. Perry sprinted between defenders and had a one-on-one with the keeper and didn't spoil the chance, pounding a hard shot into the left side of the goal.
With a 2-0 lead, the Captains settled in comfortably, and continued to test Lutte throughout the game. CNU held a 25-7 advantage in total shots, including an 11-4 edge in shots on-frame. Still, the Spartans made the ending interesting by putting one away in the 81st minute.
After a hand ball just outside the box on the right side, Chelsea McDowell lifted a perfect cross to the back post, where Corie Elliott drove home a one-time shot to cut the lead in half. Elliott, the Spartans' leading scorer, picked up her fourth goal of the season.
Sophomore
Carly Maglio played the full 90 minutes with only the one blemish, making three saves for the Captains. Offensively, Perry had five shots on-goal in six total attempts while
Alex Miller also had a stellar appearance with five shots off the bench.
Christopher Newport ran their modest win streak to three, improving to 3-1 in conference play. CNU will look to add to their streak in a pivotal CAC battle on Wednesday, October 14 as the Captains travel to first-place St. Mary's (Md.) for a 3:30 pm kickoff.
