ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- With a pair of second-half goals, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team captured a big road win in conference play on Wednesday, defeating first-place St. Mary's College of Maryland by a final score of 2-0. The Captains kept their win streak alive, winning their fourth straight and improving to 9-3-1 overall with a 4-1-0 mark in conference play. The Seahawks fall to 6-6-0 overall while suffering their first loss of the conference season, falling even with CNU's 4-1-0 league record.
Sophomore
Alexis Haycraft got the Captains on the board with the eventual game-winning goal in the 78th minute of action when she drilled home a penalty kick for her third goal of the season. Just over a minute and a half later, senior
Lindsay Mondloch gave the Captains an insurance tally when her corner kick bent in for the second goal of the game. With just over eight minutes remaining in the game, the Captains defense locked down and secured the team's sixth shutout of the season.
Facing a two-goal deficit late, the Seahawks tested CNU goalkeeper
Carly Maglio just one more time and the sophomore stepped up with a big diving stop. The shot, by CAC Player of the Week Claire Kostelnik, was headed to the left where Maglio dove and covered the shot to wrap up her fourth career solo shutout. The second-year netminder made three saves and faced 11 total shots in the contest.
Prior to the late game heroics by Haycraft and Mondloch, the Captains were locked in an even struggle with the Seahawks as both teams battled for opportunities. Both teams managed 11 shots while CNU held a slight 5-3 advantage in shots on-goal. St. Mary's goalkeeper Katie Flores also made three saves for the Seahawks, including a tough one-on-one opportunity against CNU scoring leader
Victoria Perry late in the game. The Captains held a slight 6-4 advantage in corner kicks and the two teams combined for 17 fouls in the pivotal CAC matchup.
Mondloch's goal was the second of the season for the senior midfielder and Haycraft's third tally this season held up as her first career game-winner.
The Captains will return to action this weekend for a pair of games. First, on Saturday, October 17, CNU travels to Wesley College for CAC action before entertaining the 2014 NCAA Champion Lynchburg Hornets at home on Sunday, October 18.
