CNU Women's Soccer Captures 2-0 Win at Wesley to Move Atop CAC Standings

Box Score in HTML Format

DOVER, Del. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team moved up to the top of the Capital Athletic Conference standings on Saturday after posting a 2-0 win at Wesley College. The Captains got five saves from sophomore goalkeeper Carly Maglio, and a pair of first-half goals held up as the only scoring of the evening as CNU won its fifth straight game.

The Captains improved to 10-3-1 overall with a 5-1-0 record in conference play, now tied with St. Mary's (Md.) at the top of the CAC standings. CNU defeated the Seahawks on Wednesday and have three conference games yet to play as the postseason picture is far from decided. With the loss, Wesley falls to 5-7-2 overall and 2-4-0 in CAC action.

CNU took an early lead on the home team Saturday, pulling ahead 1-0 in the sixth minute of action. The Captains' scoring leader, Victoria Perry, took advantage of a defensive lapse and put away her 11th goal of the season just 5:34 into the match. Perry delivered a perfectly placed shot into the top left corner over the goalkeeper's hands for the score, which would hold up as her fourth gamewinner of the year.

Over the next 15 minutes, the Wesley offense would pressure hard for the equalizer, but Maglio was excellent in goal for the Captains. First, she turned away a header from the Wolverine's leading scorer, Janiah Moore, and then saved another shot by the rookie four minutes later. In the 20th minute, Lauren Price challenged Maglio, but the sophomore picked up her third save to keep the home team off the board.

As momentum swung back in favor of the Captains, CNU peppered the Wolverines' goalkeeper, Antonia Pote, with four shots on-goal in a ten minute stretch. The last of which would find the back of the net as rookie Arial Gardner set up senior Shaydah Naraghi for her first goal of the season. Gardner earned her first career assist when she caught Pote off her line and found Naraghi wide open for the insurance tally in the 27th minute.

With a two-goal lead, the Captains offense never stopped, as Pote needed to make five more saves in the first half. Rookies Taylor Hudgins, Gabby Gillis and Gardner each took shots on frame, as did junior Kate Hurlock and sophomore Kaylie Deshler

In the second half, CNU continued to hold a distinct advantage offensively, running the shot differential to 46-11 by the end of the game. The 46 shots rank as the fifth most taken in a single game in program history, and are the most since the Captains registered 49 attempts against Peace in 2009. CNU also held a 13-2 edge in corner kicks and put a season-high 19 shots on-goal.

Maglio added two more saves in the second stanza to finish with five in the shutout victory. She now has three solo clean sheets this season and improved to 6-2-0 as the starting goalkeeper for the Captains. Her goals-against average dropped to 0.77, ranking second in the CAC.

The Captains have little time to celebrate the win, however, as they return to action on Sunday, October 18. CNU will host No. 4 Lynchburg College (15-1-0) at 6:00 pm on Captains Field Sunday, looking to take down the defending NCAA National Champions.
