CNU Women's Soccer Takes on Southern Virginia in Front End of CAC Doubleheader Tuesday

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Southern Virginia University for a CAC doubleheader. The Captains (6-3-1, 1-1-0) will kick off at 5:00 pm against the Knights (3-7-0, 0-1-0), playing the front end of a twin bill, as the men's teams will take the field at approximately 7:00 pm.

The road game is CNU's fifth game away from home in their last six contests. The Captains are 3-0 all-time against Southern Virginia, including a 2-1 victory at home last season. In their last trip to Buena Vista, the Captains pulled away for a 4-1 win over the Knights.

Last season, All-Region midfielder Joy Piirto scored both goals for CNU, but three current Captains assisted on her scores. First, Lindsay Mondloch and Victoria Perry combined to help on the first goal, and Allie McWilliams assisted on the gamewinner. The goals were scored within a minute and a half early in the second half as CNU gave up just one goal with Carly Maglio in net for the Captains.

This year, the Captains have been led by Perry and Mondloch, combining for half of the team's goals scored and nearly half of the assists. Perry, the reigning CAC Player of the Year, has seven goals and one assist to rank third in the CAC with 15 points; Mondloch, this week's league Offensive Player of the Week, leads the team and ranks second in the conference with four assists, while adding one goal.

Defensively, two goalkeepers have split time this season as Maglio has started three of the last four games and boasts a 75% save percentage. Junior Haley Casanova has three shutouts and a 0.96 goals against average so far this year.

Southern Virginia opened the year with just one win in its first five games, but has added two more in the last five for a 3-7-0 overall record. The Knights captured a 1-0 overtime victory against Randolph College, and edged Averett University for a 4-3 win. Sophomore Jamilla Gambee leads the team with four goals scored, while rookie Emily McFadyen has added two goals and one assist. Four different goalkeepers have combined for the Knights, led by sophomore Savannah Uri with over 500 minutes played and two shutouts.
