NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport's defense didn't allow a point through three quarters Saturday night, but the 15th-ranked Profs of Rowan came from behind with 14 fourth quarter points to post a 14-9 victory over the Captains. The New Jersey Athletic Conference game, played on a windy and rainy night at POMOCO Stadium, came during Family Weekend festivities at CNU, and marked the third straight loss for the Captains (1-3, 1-2).
Christopher Newport held a 7-0 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the Profs registered two fourth quarter touchdowns to pull out the win. Rowan is now 4-0 overall and leading the NJAC with a 3-0 conference record.
"I was really happy with our effort overall, but they just made a couple more plays than we did," CNU Head Coach
Matt Kelchner said. "Our defense was fantastic all night and kept us in a position to win the game."
The Captains out-gained the Profs in total yardage, 187-139, and held Rowan to just two of 13 on third down conversions for the night.
CNU took the lead midway through the second quarter. Junior running back
Daquan Davis scored on a one-yard run to break a scoreless tie with 8:34 to play in the first half. The Captains would hold that 7-0 edge all the way into the fourth quarter when the Profs finally broke through.
Rowan senior running back Withler Marcelin scored on a 37-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Dante Pinckney to cut the lead to 7-6 with 13:18 remaining. On the extra point, CNU senior
Cameron Barlow recovered an errant snap and returned the ball all the way for two points to give the Captains a 9-6 lead.
The Profs took the lead for the first time all night at the 6:02 mark of the fourth quarter when sophomore Jahsiem Rover scored on a three-yard run. Kicker Tyler Knighton kicked the extra point into the line, but was able to recover the football and surge into the end zone for the two-point conversion to account for the 14-9 final verdict.
"We gave up a couple of big plays at crucial times and that was the difference," Kelchner continued. "Field position is so important and we put ourselves in bad spots at a couple of key points."
Rowan had to travel just 40 and 34 yards on their two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter. Marcelin finished the game with 75 yards on 22 carries, while CNU quarterback
Tyler Quigley completed 10 of 23 passes for 103 yards with one interception. Junior wide receiver
Taylor Loudan caught four passes for 70 yards, including two beautiful diving grabs.
The Captains defense was led by junior lineman
Jayvon Temple's 12 tackles. Junior linebacker
Mikey Campbell made 10 stops.
CNU will travel to Union, New Jersey, next Saturday to take on Kean University. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
