Kean Posts Big Second Half to Beat Captains, 35-10, in NJAC Football

UNION, NJ- Kean University scored three second half touchdowns to blow open a close game and cruise to a 35-10 win over Christopher Newport. The New Jersey Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon dropped the Captains to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.

CNU trailed at the half, 14-10, but failed to record any points in the second stanza. Kean improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the NJAC following the triumph at Kean Alumni Stadium in front of 1,422 fans.

"Too many turnovers and too many penalties really hurt us," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said. "We worked hard this week and I really thought we had made some strides, but obviously we have a lot more work to do."

After Kean opened the scoring by driving 64 yards on seven plays on its first possession of the day, the Captains answered with their own lengthy drive. Senior quarterback Arsaiah Robinson scored from a yard out to cap a seven-play, 85-yard drive. CNU held a 7-6 lead after the opening quarter.

Kean added a touchdown early in the second quarter to jump back ahead, 14-7. The Captains answered with a 29-yard field goal from freshman kicker Andrew Harper to cut the lead to 14-10 at the intermission.

The second half was all Kean, as the Cougars scored three unanswered touchdowns for the 35-10 final verdict. Sophomore quarterback Charles App threw for a score and ran for three touchdowns to lead the Cougars.

CNU was penalized ten times for 89 yards, while Kean was flagged 11 times for 104 yards for the day. Kean out-gained the Captains, 452-277, in total yardage for the day. CNU was just two of 14 on third-down conversions in the loss.

Senior quarterback Tyler Quigley, who again shared time with Robinson, finished the day 21 of 40 throwing the ball for 224 yards. Senior receiver Joe Jardine caught seven passes for 67 yards.

Senior linebacker Mic Edwards led the CNU defense with 10 tackles and an interception.

Christopher Newport returns to New Jersey next Saturday to take on Montclair State. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. The Captains will try to snap a four-game losing skid as they take on Montclair State for the first time ever.

The loss to Kean came in the second meeting all-time. The Cougars defeated the Captains in the 2011 NCAA Tournament's opening round.
