SALEM, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team saw it's season-long eight game winning streak come to an end on Sunday, as Roanoke College captured a 2-0 win over the Captains in Salem. A pair of first half goals led the Maroons (9-6-1) over CNU (13-4-1) in non-conference action.

CNU outshot Roanoke in the game 16-6, and had five corner kicks compared to just one for the Maroons. The Captains defense did a solid job of limiting opportunities all night, but the home team took advantage of a pair of opportunities in the first half.

In the 17th minute, Emily Whitaker scored on a shot into the left side of the goal, providing the Maroons the eventual game-winning strike. Then, with just over a minute remaining in the first half, Whitaker connected with Anna Carter for an insurance goal. Carter smacked a hard shot just over the outstretched hands of CNU goalkeeper Carly Maglio, bouncing off the crossbar and into the goal.

In the other goal, Sarah Dvorak managed to stimy most of the Captains chances before they could develop. She leaped in front of multiple clean crosses from CNU players and stopped five shots that were on-frame in the contest. In the first half, rookie Kayla Locklear bent a hard shot from outside the 18-yard box, but Dvorak collected the attempt. Minutes later, Victoria Perry was loose and tried to slip a shot across the box to MiAsia Pinckney, but again the senior goalkeeper made the stop.

Senior Shaydah Naraghi had a shot from the top of the box in the second half that glanced off a defender and bounced toward the left side of the goal before Dvorak could track it down. Finally, the Captains got a clean header from rookie Gabby Gillis off a corner kick, but Dvorak stopped it off the line and a defender cleared the ball before a second chance by Perry.

Facing the two-goal deficit in the second half, the Captains ramped up the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Maroons by a 10-1 count, including a 3-0 advantage in shots on-goal. Gillis led the team in total shots, with five, while senior Lindsay Mondloch added three.

The Captains will close out the regular season on Wednesday, October 28 traveling to Marymount University (4-12-0, 0-8-0) at Long Bridge Park at 4:00 pm.
