Box Score in HTML FormatARLINGTON, Va. -- With just two conference games on the final day of the regular season, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team came into its Wednesday afternoon contest against Marymount University (4-13-0, 0-9-0) knowing it needed a win for a share of the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference regular season title. By the time the team left Northern Virginia, the Captains left no doubt they had won their third straight regular season conference crown after cruising to a 6-0 win over the Saints. CNU (14-4-1, 8-1-0) has now earned the top seed in all three seasons under head coach
Dan Weiler and will host a CAC Semifinal matchup on Tuesday, November 3.
Junior scoring leader
Victoria Perry continued to add to her illustrious career with another historical note on Wednesday, becoming just the third player in program history to notch back-to-back 30-point seasons. Last season, Perry collected CAC Player of the Year honors with a 35-point season and with her first of two goals on Wednesday, she eclipsed the 30-point plateu again. She joins Emily Renkin (2004-05) and Laura McFerrin (1999-2000) in the elite grouping.
She and sophomore
Kimmie Kerstiens led the offense with a pair of goals in Wednesday's match, while Perry added her 12th career game-winning goal, ranking second all-time in that category. The winner would come 10 minutes into the contest, as fellow junior
Allie McWilliams picked up her team-leading eighth assist of the year. McWilliams slipped a through ball to Perry, who blasted a hard shot into the right side of the goal with 10:01 off the clock.
Kerstiens would put away her first goal of the season in the 33rd minute, off an assist by junior defender
Sam Rabinek. Rabinek dribbled into the box on the right side before sending a low cross to Kerstiens feet, where she was able to finish for the score. The sophomore, playing in just her second game back from a mid-season injury, peppered Marymount's starting keeper, April Westmark, with two more shots on frame over the next three minutes.
With just under a minute remaining in the half, the Captains offense got another tally, this time an unassisted strike from rookie
Kayla Locklear. A long pass into the box bounced off of Westmark's hands and Locklear never gave up on the play, crashing in to score with a shot into the right side of the goal.
The Captains carried a 3-0 lead into halftime and owned a 20-3 advantage in total shots. The best chance for the home team came in the 25th minute when Abigail Mercaldo had a shot on an open goal, but a CNU defender cleared the attempt off the line.
In the second half, CNU continued the offensive surge with two quick goals in the first 6:33 of the half. First, McWilliams would get into the scoring column off an assist by Locklear. The rookie's cross came in from the left side and McWilliams made a fantastic sliding shot into the left side of the goal. Her one assist, one goal performance moved her up to second on the team in scoring with 14 points on three goals and eight assists. The helper was the first of Locklear's career.
Perry would round out her strong performance in the 52nd minute with an unassisted goal, giving her 32 points this season. That mark is tied for ninth all-time at CNU, with Bupe Okeowo's senior season in 2013.
After the goal, the Captains would check senior goalkeeper
Elena Currence into the contest for the final 35 minutes. She would help secure the shutout by making a pair of saves in the late stages of the contest. First, Sarah Lloyd pressured Currence with a shot in the 80th minute, and then, as Kirsten Campbell ripped a shot in the 86th minute, the senior made the stop. It was the ninth shutout of the season for the Captains' defense.
The final goal of the day came in the 69th minute as Kerstiens found a through ball in the front of the box and touched it past the diving goalkeeper for her second of the day.
Alexis Haycraft picked up the assist on the goal, her first of the season.
With the win, CNU tied the program record for wins in the regular season with 14, matching the 2003 season. The Captains will share the 2015 CAC Regular Season Title with St. Mary's (Md.) and captures the top seed by virtue of a head-to-head win over the Seahawks. CNU will host either #4-seed Salisbury University or #5-seed Mary Washington in the CAC Semifinals on Tuesday, November 3. Live stats and live video will be available at CNUsports.com/live.
