NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The first-place Christopher Newport women's soccer team will play a pair of games on the final weekend of the regular season, including a Senior Day matchup on Saturday against Penn State Harrisburg. The Captains (12-3-1, 6-1-0) will take on the Lions (5-8-1, 3-4-0) at 1:30 pm on Homecoming Saturday before traveling to Roanoke College (8-6-1) for a non-conference tilt on Sunday at 5:00 pm.
The Captains can clinch a first-round bye in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with a win in the final home game of the regular season, while Penn State Harrisburg is fighting to hold onto one of the final spots in the tournament. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available as the game kicks off at 1:30 pm.
This is just the third career matchup with Penn State Harrisburg, as CNU took the first two games in conference play over the last two seasons. CNU won by a final score of 3-1 in Pennsylvania last year, led by a three-point performance from midfielder
Lindsay Mondloch. Mondloch, a senior, has been one of the team's leading scorers again this season, ranking third on the team in scoring with 10 points on two goals and six assists, among the league leaders in helpers.
Also leading the way offensively have been juniors
Victoria Perry and
Allie McWilliams, with 27 and 11 points, respectively. Perry, the reigning CAC Player of the Year, has 11 goals and five assists this season while McWilliams has been stellar since moving to forward, scoring twice and adding a league-best seven assists. Defensively, CNU's back line has been very good all year, picking up eight shutouts in the first 16 games while allowing just 14 total goals.
Defensive midfielder
Abby Johnson, another senior, picked up her first career goal on Wednesday when she put away the gamewinner against Salisbury. Johnson's presence in the defensive unit has been a big asset for Coach
Dan Weiler, while junior
Sam Rabinek and sophomores
Carly Melkus,
Kira Warner and
Danielle Pratt have played the bulk of the minutes on the back line. Senior
Megan Weast has also started two games in the back, including a start against defending national champion Lynchburg.
The senior class is rounded out by reserves
Shaydah Naraghi,
Elena Currence and
Kaitlyn Bly. All six will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony at Captains Field.
Penn State Harrisburg is currently tied with York (Pa.) for the sixth and final spot in the CAC Tournament with just two games to play. The Spartans edged Penn State Harrisburg in the regular season and holds a crucial tiebreaker in the head-to-head. This season, head coach Adam Clay's team has been led by an impressive rookie campaign from Kristen Stark. The team's leading scorer has 21 points on eight goals and five assists in her first year, while Fay Ansary and Erica Hile have each chipped in 12 points this year. The offense has been playing well, averaging over four goals per game in the last four contests, in which the Lions have posted a 3-1-0 record.
Following Saturday's contest against Penn State Harrisburg, CNU will travel to face the Maroons of Roanoke College in the final non-conference matchup of the season. Kicking off at 5:00 pm, the Maroons will send a tough defense to the pitch against CNU. Roanoke has allowed just 11 goals in 15 games this season for a 0.70 goals against average, highlighted by goalkeeper Sarah Dvorak's five shutouts and 82% save percentage. Offensively, senior midfielder Ashley Barnes has three game-winning goals and leads the team with 10 points on five scores this year.
