No. 20 CNU Travels to Mary Washington For Another Crucial CAC Matchup

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The 20th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team has just two games remaining in the 2015 regular season schedule, starting with a pivotal Capital Athletic Conference matchup at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday. The Captains (10-1-5, 3-1-3) take on the Eagles (10-5-1, 3-3-1) as the two teams battle for playoff positioning in the waning schedule.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm as the Eagles celebrate Homecoming at the Battleground Athletic Complex in Fredericksburg. Live stats will be available courtesy of the Mary Washington Department of Athletics, with the link found at CNUsports.com.

CNU and Mary Washington are currently in 5th & 6th place, respectively, in the CAC standings, and the conference tournament, set to begin on Saturday, October 31, is limited to the top six teams. York College of Pennsylvania is currently in first place, followed closely by Wesley College, while Salisbury and Frostburg State are also in the mix looking for a potential first round bye in this year's CAC Tournament; the top two teams earn an automatic trip to the CAC Semifinals.

The Captains, ranked third in the most recent NSCAA South Atlantic Regional Rankings, is coming off a tough-luck tie against Salisbury University in their last contest. The Captains were leading with just over two minutes remaining when the Sea Gulls pulled even and forced the eighth overtime contest of the season for CNU. The team has now played over 131 minutes of extra time this season, matching the program record for overtime games and ties in a single season.

Junior Patrick Burns added to his team-leading scoring total in the draw against Salisbury, picking up his ninth goal of the season. He is tied for second in the CAC with 21 total points, backing up his breakout sophomore campaign with another stellar season in 2015. Senior Ryan Balfour has added 12 points on five goals and two assists, including three game-winning strikes.

Mary Washington trails CNU by two points in the CAC standings, needing a win to move up to the No. 5 spot. The Eagles raced out to a 7-1-0 start but has struggled over the last eight games, with four losses. Mary Washington has been impressive defensively, allowing just 16 goals in as many games for a 0.99 GAA. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Spencer has started all but one game, posting a 79% save percentage with a 0.86 goals-against average.

The team as a whole is very young, featuring just two seniors in head coach Jason Kilby's fifth season. Juniors Jacob Burke and Riley Fisher lead the offense with nine points each, as each has scored four goals with one assist.
