HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The 13th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will return to action on Saturday at noon when the Captains take on Denison in a neutral-site tilt at Eastern Mennonite's Turf Field.
Entering Saturday's game, Christopher Newport currently sits at 9-2 on the season, including 6-2 away from Newport News. On the other side of the field, Denison sports a 9-5 record, including a 4-3 mark on the road.

A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS Coming into the weekend, Christopher Newport ranks among the national leaders in several statistical categories. The Captains currently sit 13th in the NCAA with a 0.90 goals-against-average and 19th with a 3.64 goals-per-game mark. The squad also ranks in the top-20 in scoring average and scoring margin, while CNU's .818 winning percentage is 12th in the country.
On an individual level,
Bailey Lien ranks 22nd nationally with a 1.06 goals-against-average. Among conference performers,
Brittan Muir stands among the top-10 with four assists and three defensive saves. Equally potent on the offensive side of the ball,
Carol Thompson is tied for eighth in the league with seven goals, while
Alexa Weaver and
Lauren Cheatham have five apiece.
Cori Black has been especially potent in league action as well, driving home a pair of goals against CAC foes, which ranks fourth in the conference.
LAST TIME OUT In a top-20 battle against No. 16 Tufts, CNU dropped a 2-1 decision on a last-second goal in Medford, Massachusetts.
Rachael Allshouse gave the Captains an early lead, but the Jumbos battled back with a pair of second-half strikes. On the defensive end, Lien made four saves against TU.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED Denison suffered a 3-2 setback against Wittenberg on Thursday after ripping off four straight victories entering that contest. So far this season, the Big Red has been led by an impressive ability to earn penalty corners as the squad ranks 16th in the nation with a 12.08 corners-per-game average. On an individual level, Jen Durbin has been the team's top offensive threat with nine goals, while Britta Marden has seven and four assists. Elsie Humes has also dished out a team-high nine helpers this year, while Ellen Westfall has compiled a .732 save percentage and a 1.60 goals-against-average on the defensive end.
SERIES HISTORY Denison and CNU have met three times with the Captains holding a 3-0 mark in the all-time series. Last year, Christopher Newport posted a 2-0 victory in the season opener in Lexington.
UP NEXT Following Saturday's game, the Captains will return to action on Monday at 3 p.m. when the team hosts No. 18 Catholic.
