WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Matching her career-high with four points,
Avery Mast stole the show while leading the top-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Vassar during a neutral-site battle on Friday afternoon at Wellesley College's Butler Stadium.
Against the Brewers, Mast headlined an electric five-minute surge in the second quarter, which saw the Captains score all three of their goals. During that onslaught, the junior assisted on a blast by
Kelly Via before adding a tally of her own just 35 seconds later. Then, in the 29th minute, she set up a strike by
Courtney Hughlett to cap off the scoring.
Overall, Mast's four points equaled her career-high, matching a similar surge against St. Mary's (Md.) during the NCAA Tournament on November 13, 2024. It also marked her second career appearance with multiple assists after she previously had a pair in a win over Virginia Wesleyan on September 10, 2025.
Along with Mast, Via recorded her first game-winning goal of the year and the fourth of her award-winning career. Remarkably, she became the seventh different Captain to score a game-winner this season.
Rounding out the offensive standouts,
Courtney Hughlett scored for the second straight game, while
Caroline Hughlett chipped in with an assist. With that helper, she recorded a point in her sixth consecutive contest, equaling the ninth-longest scoring streak in program history.Â
Adding another layer to their work on Friday, the Hughlett twins teamed up to start their 64th straight game since they debuted on September 1, 2023. That moved them past current assistant coach
Marlene Lichty for the fifth-longest "Iron Man" streak in school lore. Lichty started 63 consecutive games during her Hall of Fame tenure from 2010-13.
In addition to the offensive stars, CNU continued to shine on the defensive end as well. During the contest, Vassar mustered only five total shots, including just three on-target attempts. Taking care of the rest,
Ella Fallen made three saves to earn the victory.
With that performance, Christopher Newport extended its shutout streak to 297 minutes dating back to the opening quarter against No. 10 Endicott on September 7. That stands as the fourth-longest stretch in program history.Â
With the victory, CNU improved to 7-0 on the season, while the setback snapped Vassar's three-game winning streak and dropped the Brewers to 5-3 overall.
In the opening period, the two teams traded runs during a back-and-forth affair. Early on, Fallen came out of the cage and punted a long roller that dribbled into the circle, while Via ran stride-for-stride with an attacker along the edge of the arc to force a shot to spin past the left post.
On the other side, CNU generated back-to-back corners in the middle of the stanza, and Mast unloaded on the defense. Unfortunately, her first rip was blocked by a Brewer at the top of the circle before her second try was punched away at the last second by a solid defensive save.
Continuing the seesaw battle, Vassar regained possession but struggled to find an opening. Via intercepted a crosser deep inside the circle, while
Ellen Gallagher helped kill a jailbreak in the 12th minute. On the play, two Brewers wiggled free on a breakaway, but the freshman caught up to the streaker who was running straight at the cage. Eventually, she locked off the attacker and prevented a centering feed, which allowed the rest of the defense to catch up to the play before any damage could be done.
Then, just before the end of the period, Vassar tried to orchestrate another rush from the left side of the zone, but
Kate Engle stayed low and walled off the push while forcing a turnover, which kept the game scoreless after 15 minutes.
Remaining vigilant on the defensive end in the second stanza,
Courtney Hughlett poked away a loose ball at the top of the arc before stripping a Brewer in the same spot just a few moments later. Meanwhile,
Kendall Gibson stayed on the hip of an attacker along the left post and caused an early shot to miss the mark.
After that point, Christopher Newport took over on the offensive end. In the 25th minute, the Captains secured back-to-back corners. On the second attempt,
Ellie Nuckols sent the insert to Mast, who drew some attention at the top of the zone before dishing the ball inside to Via. With one defender to beat, the junior spun to her right and fired a screamer underneath the keeper for the game's first goal.
Just 35 seconds later, the squad came back for more. Following a similar script, Nuckols inserted the ball off another corner. However, this time,
Caroline Hughlett connected with Mast, who unloaded a missile for her second goal of the season.
Then, in the 29th minute, CNU capped off the first half with one final dagger. Taking advantage of another corner, Mast served as the stopper and flipped possession to
Courtney Hughlett. With some room to work, the senior ramped the ball off the stick of a defender and sent it spiraling into the upper right corner of the cage for a highlight-reel tally, which gave the team a 3-0 edge entering halftime.
Staring at a three-goal hole after the break, Vassar tried to find a little rhythm, but Christopher Newport never let up on the back side.
Gigi Stephan stole a pair of passes in the left corner on an early surge before Nuckols added a strip in the same spot. Then, Mast knocked a pass away at the top of the circle before
Riley Iasiello cleared it up the left sideline.
Moments later, a dangerous rush began to develop as four Brewers leaked behind the defense, but Via played it perfectly. She tracked the lead streaker into the circle, and as the attacker pulled to her left to uncork a shot, Via swatted the ball away before an attempt could be taken.
With time winding down in the frame, Vassar picked up a corner, but Fallen was terrific between the pipes. The senior goalie sealed off the five hole and made a nice pad save on an initial rip before stomping out a secondary attempt along the right post, which kept the Brewers off the board entering the fourth quarter.
In the final frame, Christopher Newport continued to showcase its defense.
Emma Weber came through with a slick strip during a one-on-one showdown near the left sideline. Later, Nuckols blocked a pass along the baseline before Via intercepted a roller at the 25.
Then, Vassar garnered another corner in the 54th minute, but Nuckols and
Caroline Hughlett applied pressure at the top of the zone to prevent a quick shot before Gibson cleaned up the trash on the interior. Eventually, the senior grabbed possession and sent a seed to
Willow Yost, who burst up the field to give the defense a breather.
With little left to prove, CNU polished off the shutout in the final moments after Weber stamped out Vassar's final rush with a tackle near the 25 before blocking a pass in the left corner.
Overall, the Captains held a 12-5 advantage in shots and a 9-2 lead in corners.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday when the Captains travel to Harvard's Berylson Field for a neutral-site clash against No. 6 Middlebury at noon.
