DOVER, DE- Despite a performance that included 27 turnovers, the Christopher Newport men's basketball team held off Wesley College, 75-62. The Capital Athletic Conference victory Tuesday night at Wentworth Gymnasium was the fourth straight for the Captains.

"There aren't many teams that have been able to come into this gym and win by double digits," Head Coach John Krikorian said following the hard-fought triumph. "We knew we were in for a battle, and it wasn't pretty, but we'll take it."

Late in a back-and-forth first half, freshman Aaron McFarland drained a three-point shot in the final minute to give the Captains a 31-30 advantage at the break. It was a preview of what was about to come.

McFarland, a product of Massaponax High School in the Fredericksburg area, poured in 19 points in the second half to finish with a career-best 22. His effort fueled a CNU surge that opened the lead to as many as 15.

Sophomore Tim Daly posted 18 points and freshman Marcus Carter, the CAC's Player of the Week this week, added 16 as the Captains pulled away to register the 13-point triumph.

The Captains, now 9-3 overall, improved to 4-1 in the CAC and grabbed the lead in the league standings with the win. Wesley falls to 5-7 overall and 3-2 in league play.

"Their style is completely different from what we've been seeing," Krikorian continued. "We knew coming in it would be full-court man-to-man defense all night and we had to manage that. Even with the turnovers, we out-rebounded them and forced them to turn it over 21 times. We've got a long way to go and a lot to work on, but there were a lot of positives to pull from this."

Christopher Newport made 24 of 29 foul shots and out-rebounded the Wolverines, 38-31. Carter led the Captains with eight rebounds, and made 11 of 12 at the charity stripe. CNU cooled off a bit from three-point range making seven of 20 long-range attempts. The Captains had made 45 threes in 102 tries over their last three games.

A.J. Tilghman led the Wesley attack, scoring 16, while Jordan Johnson added 10. Wesley committed 13 of its 21 turnovers in the second half aiding the CNU surge.

The Captains will play their next two games at the Freeman Center, where they are 5-1 this season. CNU returns to action Saturday. hosting Penn State-Harrisburg with game time set for 4:00 p.m.
