NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University men's basketball squad has now won five straight game since returning from holiday break, thanks to an 81-58 triumph Saturday at the Freeman Center over Penn State Harrisburg. The victory improved CNU's overall record to 10-3, and keeps the Captains tied atop the Capital Athletic Conference with their next two opponents, St. Mary's and Marymount, at 5-1.
"Overall, we accomplished what we set out to do today," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "As a head coach, you always feel that you can do more...but overall I was happy with what we did today."
CNU never trailed in the game, and used a 16-0 run late in the first half to open up the lead. The run started with the Captains holding a 23-22 edge, and closed the first half with CNU on top, 39-23. Christopher Newport then out-scored the Lions in the second stanza, 42-35, to cruise to the 23-point win.
"That was the deciding point in the game, late in the first half when we really turned up our intensity," Krikorian continued. "We created some turnovers and got to the line and really started pulling away."
Sophomore
Tim Daly led the Captains in the scoring column with 13 points, while senior
Mike Cherry posted 12 and freshman
Marcus Carter added 11. Daly and Carter led the squad with seven rebounds each, as CNU dominated the boards, 43-33.

Penn State Harrisburg, now 2-11 overall and 2-4 in the CAC, was led by a double-double from senior Joe Farthing, who finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The victory gives CNU a 6-1 record at home this season, and the Captains have now won 46 of their last 54 home games dating back to the 2010-11 season.
The Captains knocked down 12 three-point field goals Saturday in 31 attempts. CNU has now made 62 of 153 three-pointers over the five-game winning streak.
Following Saturday's results, CNU remains in a three-way tie for the top spot in the Capital Athletic Conference. CNU, St. Mary's and Marymount were all victorious and are all 5-1 in league play.
