NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport set a new school record for three-point field goals made Saturday, connecting on 18 of 35 from beyond the arc, and cruising to a 95-61 triumph over York College of Pennsylvania. The Capital Athletic Conference victory at the Freeman Center improved CNU's record to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Senior guard
Mike Cherry led the way, knocking down six of eight three-point attempts, and finishing with 24 points. Three other Captains were in double digits as CNU captured its third straight game since returning from holiday break. Junior
Connor Laframboise posted 14 points and drilled four triples, sophomore
Tim Daly registered 13 points and nine rebounds, and freshman
Marcus Carter recorded 12 points, with half coming on two long balls.
"This is the kind of effort you want to bottle and keep for the future," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "We were able to convert outside and inside at the offensive end, and were very efficient. Our defense was great all day and created 22 turnovers, just a complete effort."
The Captains held just a six-point lead at the intermission, 41-35, but blew the game open early in the second half. CNU went on a 29-14 run to open a 70-49 advantage. The Captains held their largest lead of 36 points in the final minute at 95-59. Christopher Newport ended up out-scoring the Spartans, 54-26, in the second stanza to complete the 34-point blowout.
CNU cleared the bench down the stretch, with 16 Captains seeing playing time and 13 getting into the scoring column. Nine different Captains made a three-point shot. Earlier in the week at the Freeman Center, Christopher Newport set a new school mark for three-point field goal attempts with 38 in a 71-55 win over Otterbein. Saturday the Captains erased the record for three-pointers made with 18, and only needed 35 attempts to do it. The previous record of 17 was set in three different games against Keystone (2003), Greensboro (2012), and Methodist (2012).
Christopher Newport made 34 of 61 total shots for 55.7% shooting for the day. CNU's defense held York to just 28.6% shooting in the second half and 37.0% shooting for the game. The Captains held a 33-32 edge in the rebounding column.
The 95 points scored was a season-high for the Captains, who are now 5-1 this season at the Freeman Center.
The Spartans were led by 21 points from Matt Scamuffo and 18 from Dalton Myers. York is now 3-8 overall and 2-2 in CAC action.
Cherry's 24-point performance moved him into 14th place on the CNU all-time scoring list. He is now just five points behind Carl Haynes for 13th.
The Captains are now tied with Marymount and St. Mary's at 3-1 atop the Capital Athletic Conference standings. CNU returns to action on Tuesday with a road game at Wesley College. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. in Dover, Delaware.
