NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- As the month of January winds to a close, the Christopher Newport men's and women's basketball teams face two conference road games this week. The Captains travel to Buena Vista, Va., on Wednesday to take on the Knights of Southern Virginia University. CNU concludes the month Saturday afternoon by travelling to York, Pennsylvania, to play the Spartans of York College.
The Christopher Newport men and women both find themselves in a battle for position atop the Capital Athletic Conference.
John Krikorian's men's squad is 13-4 overall and 8-2 in league play, tied with St. Mary's and Marymount for the top spot. The Captains have won their last two, and eight of their last nine. CNU had little trouble Saturday, blowing past Frostburg State, 92-58. Freshman
Aaron McFarland, making his second straight start, led the way with 22 points. It was CNU's ninth win in ten games this season at the Freeman Center.
The CNU women, led by
Bill Broderick, are also coming off a convincing win Saturday at home over Frostburg State. The Captains prevailed, 77-52, to improve to 11-6 overall and 7-3 in the CAC. Senior Camry Green cruised past the 900-mark in career rebounds collecting 14 to go with 17 points. It was Green's 40th career double-double, and 11th of the season. The Captains are currently in fourth place in the CAC standings, just one game behind third-place Marymount.
Wednesday's doubleheader at Knights Sports Arena in Buena Vista will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the women's battle, followed by the men's tilt at 7:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for both contests at CNUsports.com, with the men's game available on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 7:10 p.m.
Southern Virginia's squads have struggled, and the Captains swept a doubleheader from the Knights on December 3rd at the Freeman Center. The men downed the Knights, 89-79, while the women sailed to a 117-76 romp. The SVU men are 2-14 overall and 0-10 in the CAC, while the women are 4-12 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
