NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Despite outshooting their opponent 18-4, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team would suffer its first setback of the season, 2-0, at the hands of Kean University (4-1-0). The Captains fall to 2-1-1 this season after closing out their in-season tournament, the Captains Classic.

CNU, coming off a dominant 8-0 decision versus Averett University, looked to have the offense clicking again early. Lindsay Mondloch blasted a shot wide right in the first minute of action and leading scorer Victoria Perry got loose for an open look on frame in the fourth minute of action. The Cougars starting keeper, KC Nunez, stopped the attempt, though, for her first of six saves in the game.

Perry had another look in the 19th minute when sophomore midfielder Allie McWilliams slipped a pass through the right side of the defense, but Perry's shot was blocked away by Nunez.

Kean would get on the board with their first shot of the contest, in the 40th minute of play. The Captains defense saw a pass deflect backwards through the middle of the field, where Emily Jurcsek ran through for a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper. After a long run,  Jurcsek converted on her first career score.

In the second half, the Cougars converted a second goal just over ten minutes into the frame. Sam Marchetti collected a loose ball down the left side and lofted a high-arcing shot from a tough angle into the right side of the goal.

Facing a two-goal deficit, the Captains continued to pressure the Kean defense, including a spurt that saw Kimmie Kerstiens hit the crossbar with an attempt and Nunez stop a Shaydah Naraghi shot from point blank range.

In the game, Perry would lead all Captains with five shots, including four on-frame. Naraghi and Kerstiens were the other two with shots on-goal, while Mondloch added four total attempts in the game. The CNU defense allowed just four total shots in the game, and just two on-goal.

CNU will be back in action this Wednesday, September 10 at 8:00 pm as they take on Virginia Wesleyan College (2-3-0) as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. Live stats and live video will be available at CNUsports.com/live.
