Sarah Perrett, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team cruised past Averett University (0-3-0) in the 2014 Captains Classic, 8-0.
CNU dominated the contest versus their former league rivals from the USA South Athletic Conference from start to finish. The first goal was scored just 4:15 into the match and the eighth and final tally came in the 84th minute, as CNU outshot the Cougars 32-2.
Perry kept up her torrid pace to start the season as she etched the first and eventual game-winning goal in the fifth minute of action. After an assist in the first game, Perry collected a hat trick in game two. In Saturday's third game of the year, the sophomore forward added two goals and now has five scoring strikes and one assist for 11 points through the first three games.
Rookie
Kimmie Kerstiens set up the first goal by Perry. Then, just under four minutes later, senior
Joy Piirto scored the second goal off a set piece just outside the box. She blasted an attempt off the wall set up by Averett, collected the rebound and blistered a second attempt into the right side of the net.
The Captains offense was firing on all cylinders, with five goals in the first half. Perry's second came at 22:00, when
Lindsay Mondloch set her up with an assist. Then, sophomore defender
Sam Rabinek scored off a corner by senior
Erin O'Shaughnessy with a header into the left side at the 26:20 mark. Finally, junior
Shaydah Naraghi put away a shot from the left side into the right corner of the goal after a pair of passes from
Megan Weast and
Kaylie Deshler.
After halftime, Deshler would pick up her second assist of the game, setting up the first of two goals by Perrett. The senior forward lofted a shot into the upper ninety on the right side for her second goal of the season. She etched number three in the 64th minute when she scored an unassisted goal off a blocked shot.
The last CNU score came off the foot of rookie
Morgan Schroder with less than seven minutes remaining in the game. Senior
Caitlyn Pabst set up the freshman, slipping a pass to her teammate at the top of the box.
In the first 45 minutes, CNU outshot Averett, 20-0 and put 14 attempts on-goal. For the game, the Captains defense would allow just two shots, including just one attempt on-frame.
Averett's Ashley Jones played the full 90 minutes in goal, making 15 saves. CNU rookie
Carly Maglio earned the win after a clean first half, while junior
Elena Currence closed out the shutout with a perfect second.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday, at 3:00 pm, as they take on Kean University (3-1-0). The Cougars shut out Virginia Wesleyan, 1-0, for their third straight win this season.
