Live VideoFERRUM, Va. -- The 12th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will open up a three-game road swing on Friday when the Captains take on Ferrum at 1 p.m. at Penn-Roediger Field.
CNU enters the contest at 5-2 on the season. Ferrum sits at 1-6. The two teams have never competed in field hockey as the Panthers just restarted their program this season following a 14-year hiatus.
For those fans unable to make it to Ferrum for Friday's tilt, the Panthers will provide live stats and a web stream of the action at FerrumPanthers.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
Christopher Newport enters the game following a hard-fought 3-0 setback to No. 7 Tufts on Saturday. During the game, the Captains and Jumbos were even in nearly every statistical category but CNU could not crack the tough TU defense.
Bailey Lien and
Savanah Cummings combined to make seven saves during the game, but their offense was blanked for the first time in 2014.
Overall this season, the CNU defense has held opponents to 1.29 goals per game as Lien and Cummings have combined for an .860 save percentage. The two sophomores have posted 32 stops, including a team-high 22 by Lien in 309 minutes of work.
Sarah Miller and
Alexa Hendrickson have also contributed on the back line with two defensive saves apiece.
Record-setting senior
Belle Tunstall has paced the offense with 10 points, including four assists. Earlier this season, she established new career records for points and assists and enters Friday just four goals shy of matching Wendy Wilson's all-time mark in that category as well. The speedster has already scored three times this year, including the game-winner against Denison in the season opener.
Taylor Williams also has four goals this season, while freshman
Carol Thompson has contributed three assists. Overall, 13 Captains have already registered at least one point this year with 10 finding the back of the cage.
Ferrum enters Friday on a four-game skid, including a 5-0 setback against Roanoke on Saturday. Courtney Hamm has scored a pair of goals for the Panthers, while Kasey Sheets and Samantha Barbarczuk have one each. On the defensive end, Alexis Atkinson and Courtney Gosslin have split time in the cage and combined for 72 saves and a 6.71 goals-against-average. Brittany Hall also has a pair of defensive saves for FC.
Following Friday's contest, Christopher Newport will be back in action on October 1 for a 6 p.m. showdown at Catholic.
