LYNCHBURG, Va. -- In one of the final non-conference matches of the season, the 12th-ranked Christopher Newport University men's soccer team will carry its 6-1-1 overall record into Shellenberger Field on Wednesday night, taking on the Lynchburg College Hornets (4-3-0). The Captains and Hornets will kick off at 7:00 pm with live stats available through the Lynchburg Athletics website and a live video webcast found at CNUsports.com/live.
Heading into the Wednesday night tilt, the Captains offense is ranked 28th nationally in scoring, averaging 2.88 goals per game. The team also ranks 27th in points per game (8.00), and 31st in assists per game (2.25).
The all-time series versus Lynchburg favors the Hornets slightly, holding a slim 7-6-4 advantage, but the Captains are unbeaten in the last five matchups. This season, the two teams have just one common opponent as both teams took on the 2013 NCAA National Runner-Up from Rutgers-Camden, with CNU capturing a 2-1 victory at home, and the Hornets winning on the road, 3-0.
Leading the offense for the Captains this season has been two-time All-American
Jalon Brown, scoring 15 points on six goals and three assists, while sophomore
Patrick Burns has added four goals and three assists. Defensively, senior
Alec Faulkner has anchored a defense that stifles opponents to just 8.5 shots per game, while junior
Nolan Mann has started five straight games and boasts a 1.53 GAA.
The home team Wednesday has been up and down this season, coming off a 1-0 loss to Bridgewater, but had won a pair prior to that setback. The Hornets have a tough defense that includes a team goals-against average of just 1.14. Senior Trevor Davis is the lone veteran in the defensive unit that includes several freshmen in front of junior goalkeeper Scott Zaring.
Offensively, Lynchburg has been led by senior Luke Moore with three goals and an assist and junior Tim Clancy with five points on two goals and an assist.
Following the game against Lynchburg, CNU will return home for the conference opener this Saturday, September 27 versus York College (Pa.).
