VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The 12th-ranked Christopher Newport volleyball team will look to extend its three-match winning streak on Tuesday evening when the Captains head to Virginia Wesleyan for a non-conference showdown at 7 p.m. at VWC's Batten Student Center.
CNU enters the match-up with a 14-1 record, including a pristine 7-0 mark away from Newport News. Virginia Wesleyan currently sports a 9-3 record and a four-match winning streak. Tuesday's contest will serve as the Marlins' home opener this season.
Christopher Newport and Virginia Wesleyan have met 12 times in history with the Captains boasting a perfect 12-0 record. Last season, CNU posted a 3-0 victory at the Freeman Center. Current sophomore
Briana Sutton led the way against the Marlins with 14 kills on just 24 swings during last year's contest.

Christopher Newport enters the week following an outstanding effort during the Juniata / ASICS Invitational. Over the weekend, the Captains won the Tournament championship with a spotless 3-0 record, including a gritty five-set victory over No. 6 Juniata. During the Invitational,
Rachel Conway paced the team with a 10.2 assists-per-set average while ranking second with 10 blocks. The junior setter was eventually named the Tournament MVP.
Sutton and
Maddie McCann also provided offensive firepower during the weekend as both sophomores earned All-Tournament honors. McCann led the team with 36 kills while hitting at a .338 clip. Sutton was equally impressive, landing 32 kills with a .412 attack percentage. Overall, the Captains hit .329 as a team and limited the opposition to a .110 mark.
Overall this season, Sutton has a team-high 157 kills while hitting .297.
Hannah Miller has also been productive along the front line, punching 154 kills to go along with 46 blocks. The sophomore has also compiled a .411 hitting percentage, which ranks among the top-10 in the nation.
Along the back row,
Brooke Moore is averaging 4.20 digs-per-set. The senior libero has also pummeled the opposition with 19 aces, while
Abby McIntyre has a team-high 26.
Ashley Rock has contributed 23 winners as well.
Virginia Wesleyan enters Tuesday on a four-match roll, including victories over Emory & Henry and Guilford on Saturday. The Marlins have been led by Alex Lambert, who earned All-Tournament honors at the Captains Classic earlier this season. The senior middle hitter has a team-high 145 kills in addition to 19 blocks. Kirstin Sessoms has also doled out an average of 8.56 assists-per-set, while Marin Crowder has anchored the back row with 157 digs.
Following Tuesday's action, Christopher Newport will be back in action on Friday for a 6 p.m. battle at Averett.
