NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With a goal and an assist to lead the 11th-ranked Captains (6-1-1) to a win over Rutgers-Camden (4-4-0), senior forward Jalon Brown became just the fifth player in program history to eclipse 100 points in his career. Christopher Newport scored a pair of second-half goals and held the 2013 NCAA National Runner-Up to just four shots in the game, shutting out the Scarlet Raptors, 2-0.

Coming into Saturday's contest with 99 points, Brown would join the elite club wih his helper on the game's eventual winning goal in the 60th minute of action. For good measure, the Yorktown, Va. native added an insurance goal with less than five minutes remaining to run his career tally to 102 total points.

The marquee matchup with Rutgers-Camden provided the Captains with another big win in non-conference action, improving to 6-1-1 on the season. The Captains offense continues to impress after halftime, scoring multiple goals after intermission for the sixth time this season.

The first goal would come off a corner kick with just over 30 minutes remaining in the match. Brown would take the set piece, lifting a perfect cross into the box where senior defender Stephen Landry flicked a pass toward the back post. Sophomore midfielder Jimmy Grace reached the second ball first, heading the ball into the left side of the net. It was Grace's first goal of the season.

The CNU offense continued to pressure the Rutgers-Camden defense for the remainder of the match, getting off 10 shots in the second half, including five on-goal. Early in the half, Raptors keeper Eric Bumbera would make a sensational leaping save on an attempt by sophomore Harry Nodwell. He would also stop a pair of attempts from rookie Andrew Gogolin and Henry Gotay.

With less than ten minutes to go, the Captains made a couple terrific runs up the middle of the field with long passes from the defense, but each attempt was stopped by the Raptors defense until the 86th minute. After an aggressive play forward by Rutgers-Camden, Grace found himself open in the middle of the field with Brown on the run. He connected with the senior forward who split a pair of defenders and raced toward the box. With just one man to beat, Brown squeezed past a tackle and then unleashed a hard shot into the low right corner of the goal. It was his sixth tally of the season, running his season scoring total to a team-leading 15 points.

In the final five minutes, the CNU midfielders continued to control the ball on the sidelines, as Alex Makumbi, Preston Key and Nodwell each took turns holding the ball away from the Raptors. A desperation attempt from Rutgers-Camden came in the final minutes, but it was launched high and junior netminder Nolan Mann secured the clean sheet.

It was the third shutout of the season for the Captains defense, led by seniors Alec Faulkner, Tommy O'Neal, Stephen Landry, and junior Sean Christein. CNU outshot the visitors by a final tally of 18-4, including a dominant 7-1 advantage in attempts on-goal.

Christopher Newport is back on the road for one game at Lynchburg this week, taking on the Hornets this Wednesday, September 24, and will return to Captains Field next Saturday, September 27 in the conference opener against York College (Pa.) at 3:00 pm.
