NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The fourth-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will kick off the home portion of its 2014 schedule on Wednesday evening when CNU hosts No. 19 Lynchburg at 6:30 p.m. at Captains Turf Field.

Christopher Newport enters the contest with a 1-0 record after upending Denison, 2-0, in the squad's season opener on Saturday in Lexington, Va. Lynchburg comes to town with a 1-1 mark after dropping a 2-1 double-overtime decision to Wesley on Saturday before bouncing back with a 4-1 triumph over Swarthmore on Sunday.

For those fans unable to make it out to Wednesday's contest, the action will be streamed live on CNUsports.com. Both live stats and a web stream of the game will be available at CNUsports.com/Live.

One of the longest-running rivalries in CNU history, the Captains and Hornets have battled 14 times since first meeting in 2000. During that time, each program has won seven games. Last year, Christopher Newport pulled out a 1-0 victory in Lynchburg behind a second-half goal by Lauren Cheatham.

In the opener on Saturday, the Captains survived a scoreless first half by tossing a pair of goals on the board in the second half to seal the 2-0 win over Denison. Belle Tunstall opened the scoring off an assist by Alexa Hendrickson before Cheatham gave the squad a little cushion following a pass by Tunstall. Overall, the Captains out-shot the Big Red, 13-8.

On the defensive end, Bailey Lien and Savanah Cummings split time in the cage to record the shutout. Lien registered two saves in a spotless first half before Cummings tallied one stop during a scoreless second half. They were aided by an impressive defensive effort from the back line as the squad surrendered just three shots on goal and clamped down on seven penalty corners.

Lynchburg has received solid production from senior Kelsey Link, who boasts two goals in the early going. Courtney Gillette, Danielle Kreider, and Taylor Quillen have also found the back of the cage for the Hornets. On the defensive end, Gillette has a pair of defensive saves, while Beka Hess has started both games and notched nine saves between the pipes.

Following Wednesday's action, Christopher Newport will head back out on the road for a pair of games in Greencastle, Indiana this weekend. The Captains will battle No. 20 DePauw on Saturday at noon before taking on Wittenberg on Sunday at noon.
