NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 11th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team will play host to the 2013 NCAA National Runner-Up on Saturday evening, as Rutgers-Camden (4-3-0) comes to Captains Field for a non-conference matchup. The Captains (5-1-1) will take on the Scarlet Raptors at 7:00 pm, marking the first matchup between the two programs since 1994.
Live stats and a live video webcast are available for fans who are unable to attend, with both links found at CNUsports.com/live.
Last season, the Raptors lone loss came in double overtime in the national championship game to Messiah College. This year, the season has started a bit slower, as Rutgers-Camden has gone 4-3 through their first seven games. This week, the Raptors fell out of the national rankings for the first time since 2011, snapping a 36-week streak in the Top 25.
Meanwhile, the Captains started the season unranked and have climbed to as high as No. 6 nationally this season, and are currently ranked 11th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Earlier this week, the Captains earned a 1-1 draw versus unbeaten Methodist University, seeing their overall record run to 5-1-1 on the season.
Offensively, two-time conference Player of the Year
Jalon Brown has paced one of the most potent attacks in the nation. CNU ranks 19th nationally in scoring offense, led by Brown's five goals and two assists for 12 points. Ten different Captains have scored a goal already this season, and 16 CNU players have registered at least one point.
The offense has scored multiple goals in all but one game so far this season, and has been particularly dangerous in the second half. Nearly 75% of the Captains offense has come after halftime, scoring 15 of 21 goals this season in the second stanza.
Rutgers-Camden has also scored multiple goals in each of its four wins this season, but are only averaging 1.71 goals per game in total. Mike Ryan leads the Raptor offense, scoring five goals and adding one assist so far. Joe Auleta (2g, 2a) and Jeramey Robbins (3g) have each scored six points to tie for second on the team. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Eric Bumbera has started six of seven games, posting an impressive 0.85 goals against average with a save percentage nearing 81%.
After Saturday's contest, the Captains will return to action on Wednesday, September 24 at Lynchburg College.
