WINCHESTER, Va. -- After opening the season with six straight games in the Hampton Roads area, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team is headed out on the road this week, starting with a non-conference tilt at Shenandoah University Wednesday evening. The Captains, off to a 3-1-2 start this season, will take on the Hornets (1-4-1) at 5:00 pm.
For fans unable to make the trip with the team, live stats and a live video webcast will be provided via the Shenandoah University website. Links can be found on the women's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.
The non-conference battle will rekindle the series between the two teams who have faced off 15 times previously as former conference foes. While in the USA South Athletic Conference, the Captains held a dominant 11-3-1 advantage in the all-time series, but Shenandoah left the series on a high note, dropping CNU in the 2011 USA South Tournament in their final matchup.
Led by sophomore forward
Victoria Perry, the Christopher Newport offense has been impressive early in 2014, averaging 2.67 goals per game. Perry has notched all three game-winning goals for the Captains, ranking her second in the nation in winning tallies. She has six total goals and two assists for a league-leading 14 points, while senior
Sarah Perrett is second on the team with four goals and eight points so far this season.
Defensively, the Captains are young, but talented, holding opponents to just over seven shots per game in the first six games. Senior
Kelsey Thomas is joined by sophomore
Sam Rabinek and rookies
Kira Warner and
Carly Melkus on the back line, all playing in front of sophomore netminder
Haley Casanova. As a team, the Captains have a 0.78 goals against average with five goals allowed this season.
Shenandoah is coming into Wednesday's game after a big 9-0 win in their last contest, dropping Randolph College for their first win of the season. It was their second shutout of the season after also earning a scoreless draw with Coast Guard earlier this season. Averaging 11 shots per game, the offense has only managed scoring tallies in a pair of games so far. Sophomore Jennifer Nguyen leads the offense with three goals and an assist.
