NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm, the 11th-ranked Christopher Newport University men's soccer team will return home for a non-conference tilt versus Methodist University at Captains Field. The Captains are ranked 11th by the NSCAA and moved up to 13th in the most recent D3soccer.com national poll.
CNU has started the year with five wins in their first six games, with one of the nation's most torrid offensive attacks through the first three weeks of action. The scoring offense ranks 19th nationally, with 3.33 goals per game, and CNU has scored multiple goals in each of its first six games.
CNU is currently ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA South Atlantic rankings and Methodist is receiving votes. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com/live.
The Captains suffered the firist setback of the season last weekend, falling to nationally-ranked Trinity University. The team rallied and bounced back with a 4-2 win over Southwestern and heads into Wednesday's game looking to get back on a winning streak in front of one of the nation's top home field crowds. This season, Captains Field has hosted the fourth-highest average crowd in the nation, with 740 per game.
Offensively, senior
Jalon Brown and sophomore
Patrick Burns are tied for the team lead in scoring with 11 points so far. Brown has five goals and one assist while Burns has scored four times and chipped in three helpers. Already this season, sixteen different CNU players have contributed at least one goal or one assist.
Methodist comes into Wednesday's game undefeated this season, posting a 5-0 record in their first three weeks. In fact, the Monarchs have yet to surrender a goal, posting five straight shutouts to start the season. Goalkeeper Alex Rabone has started all five games and has turned away all nine shots on-goal the team has faced this season.
On the other side of the ball, the Monarchs also feature a potent offense averaging 5.40 goals per game. Three players have already scored at least five goals this season, led by seven from rookie reserve Stefan Cyvin. Eirik Nordseth (6g, 1a) and Seth Harrison (5g, 1a) are the other two already in double-figure scoring for the season.
CNU owns a 28-15-1 advantage in the all-time series, including six straight victories for the Captains.
