SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The offense was firing on all cylinders again Sunday, as the sixth-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team cruised to a bounce-back victory in Texas. The Captains (5-1-0) scored one in the first and added three more second-half goals to race past Southwestern University (0-5-0), winning 4-2.

Through the first six games, the Christopher Newport attack has been terrific after halftime, scoring 75% of the season's goals in the second half. With three more on Sunday, CNU now has 15 scoring strikes after the intermission.

The Captains would get out to a 1-0 lead in the first half when junior forward Ryan Balfour converted in the 17th minute of action. After getting a pass just outside the box, Balfour made a nifty move past two defenders to get an open look. He laced a hard shot into the upper ninety on the right side. That would be all the scoring in the first half, despite CNU holding a dominant 12-3 advantage in total shots. The Captains managed six shots on-goal in the first half compared to just one by the Pirates.

It wouldn't take long into the second stanza for the action to get revved up, as senior Alex Makumbi put away his second goal of the season in the 52nd minute. Sophomore Patrick Burns unleashed a hard shot that was saved by Southwestern keeper Travis Carmichael, but Makumbi followed up with the rebound for the Captains' second goal of the match.

Southwestern pulled back within one in the 60th minute when Christian Lopez found Andres Carreno-Mende for the first of two goals in the game. Just moments later, though, Burns scored the eventual gamewinner from 25 yards out to the upper left corner. The scoring surge would continue when the Pirates reserve forward scored in the 66th minute, and the Captains added an insurance goal in the 71st. Rookie Cameron Vaughn launched a shot from over 30 yards out, scoring his first career goal. His tally came off an assist from senior defender Tommy O'Neal

In the game, CNU outshot Southwestern, 25-12, with a 15-5 edge in shots on-goal. The Captains also led the corner kick battle, 11-1. Carmichael finished with 11 saves for the Pirates, with four goals allowed. Offensively, CNU saw seven different players register multiple-shot efforts.

Christopher Newport will now return to Newport News for a pair of games this week, taking on Methodist University on Wednesday, September 17, and nationally-ranked Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, September 20.
